Skinkie-Style :: Fashionable Fundraising, Part 2

0

Following my last post I was thrilled to see a packed house at the RFL Grande Finale Fashion Show at the Sky Globe Theatre last Sunday & Monday. Organised by Ina Centaur and hosted by Sensuality Cordeaux the items worn were 100% Relay For Life from skin, hair and eyes to clothes, shoes and jewellery. If you missed this historic event all is not lost. The RFL Vendor Fair continues until the 19th July at Skin City.

Another historic, or should I say “momentous” RFL event is due to take place this Sunday, 13th July – the Momento RFL Benefit Auction.

Momento_Ad.jpg

Fishhook_2_1000.jpgThe organisers, Alaska Metropolitan and Tigerlily Koi promise us it will feature “Limited Editions, Exceptionally Hard-to-Finds & Original One-of-a-kind creations, all from some of the grid’s finest Designers; Past, Present & New Rising Talents.” I’m reliably told to expect some items from Last Call/Dazzle, Random Calliope and the very last Fishook Dress by Eshi Otawara which I previously featured here. All auction items are donated by your favourite designers and the proceeds will all go to Relay For Life. Mark it on your calender!

Until then you can amuse yourself and find some bargains into the… erm.. bargain at the Relay For Life Yardsale. Designers from all over the grid have cleared out their inventories and are offering YOU their cast-off’s at very reasonable prices. Ever wanted to know what is lurking in the depth of your favourite fashionista’s closet? Now is your chance to find out!

Party_Princess_1.jpgOn to the fashion. I have three more Relay For Life outfits for you today, slightly more casual than last week’s offerings. The first is a beautiful dress from Nicky Ree, the Penny Dress in pink. Nicky has reworked the handdrawn fabric she used for her older “Flight of Fancy” collection to create this fabulous summer dress. Perfect for strolls along the beachfront on warm summer evenings followed by drinks with friends in the garden of your favourite pub.

With it I am wearing Elikapeka Tiramisu’s Survive hair. This comes in three packs of five shades, each for a mere L$400 donation and won’t be available after the 19th July. The hair beads are made specifically for this style by Eolande. A similar set are available for ETD’s other RFL hair, Strength III, but the beads can easily be adjusted and worn with any hairstyle. An easy way to add a little funk to your look.

Also from Eolande is the jewellery, a version of her Celtic Blossom Jewellery in a very pretty and unique RFL metal. I’ve been a fan of Eolande’s hair accessories since she first started and her more recent jewellery offerings are of the same high standard at a very reasonable price.

I just love these leg lengthening platform shoes from Tesla, so much so that, after trying on the beige version that I was sent for review, I went and bought the four-pack. At L$300 for a great shoe in black, beige pink and pale blue from one of the best sculptie shoe makers on the grid you just can’t go wrong though. Hurry, they will only be around for 10 more days!

Party_Princess_Jewellery.jpg

Outfit 1

The next outfit I wore for days on end. As much as I adore getting dressed up, looking glamorous and earning my fashionista stripes, when I’m mulling around doing day-to-day work around the grid, building or shopping, this is exactly the sort of thing I’ll be wearing.

The clothing is from a shop I’d not heard of before, Nova by designer NovaStar Shilova. The jeans are sold as part of another outfit, but here I have teamed them with the gorgeous cashmere hoodie in Blossom from the same designer. It’s not shown well here, but the jeans outfit comes with four designs of chest tattoo, each the kanji symbol for courage, health, love and strength respectively, perfect symbolism for a RFL gift.

ETD_Strength_Casual.jpg

Outfit 2

My favourite part of this outfit has to be the Francoise Flats from Shiny Things. I don’t often wear flat shoes in SL as most I’ve seen are on the clumpy side, even ballet flats. But Fallingwater Celladoor has shown yet again why she is one of the most noteworthy shoe designers on the grid with her perfect, naturally shaped offering. They come in a number of shades/patterns, but I chose multiswirl as a shoe that will match almost any outfit.

Relay For Life isn’t just about fashion. Builders of every kind have made items for this cause and two of them can be seen in this photograph. The sofa is part of a 16+ piece low prim, sculpted living room set by Topaz Square and comes in a variety of colourways, and the Crystal candlelight Lamp is from Henredon Homes, the designers behind Calla’s new store.

The last of today’s offerings is from a designer who is relatively new to the SL fashion scene, but has deservedly created a storm – Zaara. The designs in this store are bang-on-trend right now, mixing modern design with ethnic patterns.

Zaara.jpg

Outfit 3

For RFL Zaara has released this beautiful babydoll style dress called “Freespirit” in pink. Little details such as the ribbon tie at the back, as well as the stunning pattern and colour combinations set this apart. I’m wearing it with the ultra-realistic Gaeae skin from IC-skins, another RFL creation from the ever-generous Ina Centaur and Random Calliope’s Heart & Soul jewellery, a RFL Limited Edition set.

My thanks go to all the designers who not only created these items, but who also put in so much time and effort to organise events to amuse, educate and entertain us whilst raising money for this important cause.

What could be better than going on a shopping spree, than going on a shopping spree and knowing you are helping a good cause at the same time. With Relay For Life 2008 reaching it’s climax in less than three weeks, Second Life is a-buzz with events in aid of Cancer Research. If you are anything like me it can all become rather overwhelming at times, and amidst all the rest of the releases, fashcon notices, freebies and excitement that is SL I easily forget which designer released which outfit for what. So, to aid you as you make your charitable choices, over the next few weeks I am going to be bringing you a selection of the fantastic designs that are available around the grid in aid of Second Life Relay For Life 2008. We start with every little girl’s dream, princesses, but in three very different styles.

FunkyPrincess

When I put the word out to designers that I was planning this series Callie Cline contacted me and offered to lend me her “one-of-a-kind” Funky Princess outfit to show you. This has sadly already been sold at silent auction for an unknown price to an unknown bidder but it is just SO gorgeous I had to show it to you (plus I couldn’t resist getting to try it on myself).

Funky_Princess2.jpg

Moreover, it is a stunning backdrop to Random Calliope’s “Heart And Soul” jewellery set. Random’s own words sum up Second Life Relay For Life better than I ever could :

“Compassion is contageous, I believe. I also believe compassion is a trait we share with our animal cousins. With this I feel that the ability to organize ourselves around this deep feeling within ourselves is also a shared instinct. Being human, being humanitarian, gives us the unique ability to organize with intelligence and a network of complexity that allows truly amazing things to happen.

When we, as a species, are confronted with, and each personally devistated by, an affliction such as cancer, acts of seemingly random compassion take place in villages, towns and cities around the world until we are each touched and inspired by them. Individually we yearn to do something about it and we reach out until we find the collective that can and will have the greatest impact.

This collective is Relay For Life.

To expand further, the phenomenon that is Relay For Life in Second Life, brings out the best in a new world teeming with individuals who do not fear admitting they love one another, and thank each other daily for being part of one another’s lives. One can only imagine the impact such shared emotion can have if we all contribute, just a little as we can.”

Random Calliope's Heart And Soul Set

I’ve chosen Calla’s Azalea hair with this outfit in the “Relay” colour, a soft pale lilac. Each of Calla’s Relay For Life hair packs comes with six colour variations, a real bargain for the suggested donation amount.

From a funky princess we move on to… well, a grungy one.

Princess_Carita

Princess_Carita_Bag.jpg

One of my joys is putting together items that wouldn’t naturally fit together, in an almost irreverent way, but a way that works, and I have to say I love the look I’ve put together here. The key pieces are all designs made for Relay For Life by top Second Life designers.Princess_Carita_Eyes.jpg

Worn with Rebel Hope’s Laurie dress, the dramatic skin is one of a series of “Missing Person” skins made by Ina Centaur of IC Skins and Skin City. Drawing inspiration from newspaper advertisements of missing people the monochrome skin represents, in Ina’s words, “fatal cancer kidnapping you.” The eyes, also from IC, are the newly released for RFL Ezaret Eyes in Blood which pick up perfectly the colours of Alienbear’s “Princess Carita RFL Special” jewellery. Together, this edgy yet feminine look is a style that you could possibly only get away with in Second Life – all the more reason for loving it.

My next princess couldn’t be more different, venturing into the realm of fantasy. Nicky Ree’s Winter Flame series is one of my favourite of her designs and the Snowy light blue Relay For Life version is evocative of the snowy landscapes of Narnia.

Ice_Princess

Available for RFL as the combo pack, this set isn’t cheap but there are so many different ways of wearing the different skirtIce_Princess_2.jpg and top styles you will definitely get your money’s worth. Take away the wings and you have an elegant ballgown with no less than three skirt varieties, or wear the short skirt for a more casual look.

Tigerlily Koi’s Gardenia hair in Relay with white tips works beautifully with this dress, picking up on the hint of lavender in the fabric. This is followed through to the shoes, Spring Stilleto’s from Shiny Things (not RFL). I’m wearing an IC-skins Missing Person skin again here, and the Ezaret eyes in “Original”, a delicate soft grey, a Relay For Life limited edition.

Three beautiful and very different styles, all supporting the same cause. Most of the RFL items are only available until the relay itself on July 19th, so hurry!

Fresh off the boat from two weeks sunning myself by the pool in France I’m in the mood for elegance, romance and a little “je ne sais quoi” *wink*. Courtesy of the Laughing Academy, I have found a gown that fits the bill perfectly, and an equally perfect setting is found at the Second Life representation of the Chateau de Versailles.

Image 1 :: The Vanessa Victorian Gown in Ivory

The Laughing Academy is a shop I came across shortly before my vacation. Whilst I wouldn’t routinely feature historical designs on Fashionista, the Vanessa Victorian Gown is so beautiful, so romantic, I just had to share. The delicate lace around the decollage and hemline, the textures and the prim work of the elegant, slightly flirty bussle are all exquisitely done, amongst the best I’ve seen at capturing the favoured gown shape of the era. And boy, does it make you feel feminine. I almost wanted to curtsey! There are five versions available, two of which I’ve shown here. Four have an ivory base with detailing picked out in soft pastel, the fifth being the “night” version, perfect for any formal evening event.

LAcademy_2.jpg

Image 2 :: The Vanessa Victorian Gown in Ivory

The hair comes from Historical Heroines. All of the wigs sold here are named after well known literary women such as Miss Eyre, Miss Doolittle and Miss Westenra. Adorable details are included with some styles, such as snoods, hats and hair pins. For vintage footwear my first port of call is always Lassitude and Ennui. Their boots are perfect with any gown, but also look great with modern fashions – try teaming them with jeans or a calf-length frock.

LAcademy_3.jpg

Image 3 :: The Vanessa Victorian Gown in Night

I have accessorised the ivory dress with Caliah Lyon’s Chatelaine Shoulder Brooch and Chain, an extremely classy piece of jewellery. I didn’t have time to get a copy myself, but I quite fancy that her newly released Catherine Pearl Cocktail Ring would also be a great addition. Random Calliope’s Ode jewellery is perfect for an evening look, and what’s more, costs you nothing but time, patience, and a sore left-clicking finger – pieces are available only by catching them, hidden inside butterflies that Random releases from time to time across the grid. Join the Ode Butterfly Collectors group for details of releases and to arrange trades to complete your sets (I’m after emerald /navy&emerald /crimson&scarlet pieces). Great fun and well worth the effort to get hold of some of the finest jewellery on the grid.

Skinkie-Style :: Miss Nomer

Meet my alter-ego, Miss Nomer, a babe with that retro-vibe going on that is just SO cool and with it. She is so-named because her clothes are actually BLAND…. and yet so NOT bland. Confused? Well, that’s my default setting so join the club *grins*. I shall try to explain.

Rachel Breaker and Chave Paderborn are the designers behind BLAND, a store that is new to me (and new-ish to FashCon I believe) . Yet Chav I am aware of, as she is the creative genius behind Steamstress, the tongue-in-cheek victorian steampunk shop that brought us the fabulous Skypirate Hat. It took me a little while to work out where I knew the name from as Chav’s new venture couldn’t be more different, yet it still retains it’s subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) underlying humour.

When I visited the store and subsequently approached Chav to request some review items, she asked me what I would like. My reply could only be “all of it” – I felt like a kiddie in a candy store with so many cute, gorgeous and quirky clothes to choose between. I eventually whittled it down to a few outfits, two of which I am going to show you today. But really, you should go and look for yourselves as this is merely the tip of a very lovely iceberg.

Miss_Nomer_Yellow.jpg

Image 1 :: BLAND Bee Dress

I’m not sure how the retro-thing came in. BLAND is not, per se, a retro store and when I started out I certainly wasn’t aiming that way, but it just worked. The hair (by Ingenue), the funky 12 ” vinyl record bag, the Mary-Janes… if I’d had more time I’d have not felt out of place hanging out at a 60’s diner chatting up Marty McFly. Yet the bright yellow is bang-on-trend for this season and would look just as fabulous with a cropped jacket and pumps for a sexy, modern office look.

The Polkadotty Dress I fell in love with immediately. The ultra-short puffy babydoll style has echo’s of the Beatlemania era when skirts only just brushed the underside of your butt (I’ve seen pictures of my Mum – obviously I’m far to young to recall this :p), but the bold, bright polkadot’s are bring it right up to date.

Miss_Nomer_Dotty.jpg

Image 2 :: BLAND Polkadotty Dress

I wanted short hair for this look, and eventually went for a male wig by ETD that I’d bought in one of Elika’s fabulous sales. There are very few men’s hairs out there that don’t suit women with just a few tweaks, so don’t be shy of picking up hair bargains meant for men and giving them a try. The fabulous purple lipstick is courtesy of the Jadzia Noxious skins from The Abyss. These are one of my top two favourite skins (the other being Starley Therian’s Vogue skins at Celestial Studio’s) and come in packs with a variety of bold shiny lip colours – a set seriously worth saving up for, you will get much use out of them. Together, this edgy modern-retro look is just begging for a party to boogie-on-down at – sounds good to me!

Skinkie-Style:: The Esthetics of Make-Up

2

Something slightly different from me this week. I don’t normally do skin reviews, but when I was trying on a bunch of skins I’d picked up from the Skin Fair (yes, a little belatedly) one set stood out so much I almost didn’t have time to put my clothes back on before running to pick up some more demo’s. Esthetica Makeup Arts (EMA) isn’t a particularly easy store to find. It’s set off the mainstore of Material Squirrel, in one of the wings, at the far end of a wide corridor – certainly not a shop you would see in passing. Which is a shame, as Alexis Stapovic produces some nice work.

EMA_Neoplasm_Jen.jpg

(EMA) Neoplasm MakeUp in Jen Skintone (Relay For Life Skin)

When Eloh Elliot released her free-perms Another Shop skins earlier this year she, in my opinion, shook up the Second Life® fashion industry more than any other single person has in the history of “Phil’s Place”. Skins were suddenly not something that only the incredibly talented few could aspire to produce, at extortionately high cost to the consumer. Everyone could now own a more than decent looking skin, and anyone who wished to could now try their hand at skin design, having a good basis from which to work. The downside has been that everyone and his/her dog has made a skin, and some really aren’t worth the upload fee. Most have had so little about them changed from Eloh’s originals that avatars risk becoming mere clones of each other. And, from a purely personal point of view, Eloh’s skins frankly just don’t suit some shapes (mine included). It’s a refreshing change, therefore, when I come across a skin, worked from the original Eloh bases, that is a little different…. and done well. EMA produces such skins.

The striking thing about EMA skins is the eye make-up. Hardly surprising then that Alexis also makes a range of eye textures under the brand name “Flawed Perfect”. Stating her influences to be “from of a multitude of sources, from the natural world of plants, animals and nature, to the exotic wild color of broadway show girl musicals… All of it. Everything.” [from EMA website] there is more than a hint of “catwalk” to Alexis’ designs.

The skins come in six skintones ranging from pale (Willow, Kim), thro’ light tan (Amanda, Fiona) to medium-dark tan (Jen, Autumn), all of which have been reworked from the original Eloh bases to totally original tones. The body shading of the Eloh skins is retained (and so not shown here), however, to my eye there is more “glow” giving a fresh soft feel. This glow extends to the face, again retaining the lip shape (and slight smile) and nose shading characteristic of Eloh, but with significant change to the cheek area and, especially, the eye area.

Enough of the whittering, and on with the pictures! Click on the pictures for larger image.

Skinkie-Style :: The Big, The Bold and The Beautiful

2

The influence of big name designers in what we wear is immense, even if we aren’t aware of it, as memorably demonstrated by Meryl Streep’s character, Miranda Priestly, in “The Devil Wears Prada”. So it’s not surprising that the trends seen on the catwalk have made their way into Second Life® fashion. Spring 2008’s trends have a very fresh feel to them, with vibrant colours, bold designs, hippy-chic, tribal prints and sculpted architectural accents. I’ve picked three outfits to show you which incorporate these trends whilst retaining the designer’s creativity and originality.

Big_Bold_Montage.jpg

The Big…

The bold floral print and scuplted shape of my first dress is a step away from what I’ve come to expect from it’s creator, Grace Winnfield who is known for her fabulous ballgowns. The cutting edge design of the Surrealia dress is no less fabulous and perfect for the spring season. The part-sculpted skirt comes in two lengths, the slightly longer version shown here.

Gracies_Orchid_Dress.jpg

Storm Schmooz’s gorgeous Duote 2 shoes had me drooling the moment I set eyes on them. The patent leather and unusually shaped heel and toe are features seen on many catwalks whilst the bright lime green is the shade of the moment. I’ve kept other accessories miminal, the drama of the dress being the central focus of this outfit.

The Bold…

It has to be said, this season’s fashions aren’t for the shy and retiring. Luckily I am neither, so when I saw the latest release from DP Serendipity I knew me and my lindens were soon to be parted.

Double_Paradox.jpg

Bold geometric flowers in bright pinks and greens teamed with above the elbow gloves, this dress is a fashionista’s dream. The subtle hints of yellow are picked up in the unmistakable Periquita shoes and some dramatic statement jewellery finishes a look that is sure to get you noticed for all the right reasons.

The Beautiful…

My favourite of the many colours on the Spring ‘08 catwalks is the aqua-blue favoured by the likes of Christian Dior, Ellie Saab and Valentino. It is also favoured by one of Second Life®’s top designers, Digit Darkes. The Serina dress is absolutely stunning. From the sheer bolero with ruffles and poofy shoulders, past the asymmetric sequinned bodice, to the layered fabrics of the skirt which almost bounces as you move, this dress will make you feel and look like a million dollars.

Digit_Dress__blue_.jpg

With it I have worn the unusual backless “SaSa” wedged pumps by Emeriselle Theas of Orchid Dreams in blue spring, and Lassitude & Ennui’s Desdemona necklace and earrings, pretty feminine touches to finish off this beautiful romantic look.

Skinkie-Style :: Naima That Celeb

3

Naima (previously Emporio Naima) crept into my consciousness back in the autumn-winter when they released a most gorgeous must-have sculptie sweater, but over the weeks that followed return visits yielded little new to spark my enthusiasm. However, that changed a week or two ago when a FashCon notice appeared with some new releases. It was clear that someone had been working hard behind the scenes with sculpties and the newly revamped shop held a host of gems I wanted to snap up immediately. Having tried on a demo or two, Naiman Broome, the man behind the brand was kind enough to let me have a couple of review copies to show you.

My pictures aren’t up to my normal standards today – apologies. I can’t even blame Windlight, as I’ve been using it since it was a beta version and love it. I’ve just been having a bad-photo-day (like a bad-hair-day but the evidence is there for longer). Still, I hope they are good enough to give you an idea you can then check out further in-world.

Naima_NY_Montage_copy.jpg

The New York Jacket is a short bomber-style leather jacket which comes with a huge number of options. It can be worn open or closed, with the collar up or down, with a hood, again up or down, and comes with body prims sized for small or large breasts (size 40 on the sliders being the cut-off). There are nine colours to choose from (or ten if you buy the “panchromatic” pack), shown here in blue-black.

The detailing on this jacket is superb. To my untrained eye the textures appear to be a mixture of photosourced with some hand-drawn elements. Whilst I often shy away from photosourced clothing, this is very well done and works well. I’ve teamed it with Musim’s dark-grey leather pants and ReTox’s humourous “Run DMCA” t-shirt for a rock-chick look.

Naima_ROMA_Montage.jpg

Trench coats were the talk of autumn-winter this year, but are perfect too for showery April days too. Naima’s version, the Roma, is a short leather trench with lovely prim work and fantastic texturing. Again, there are different options included to wear it open or closed, with or without the shirt underlayer. It is also available in a host of colours, but it’s worth being aware that the “Black” version looks very dark brown. For a true black go for the “Black Pearl” colour. I preferred the dark brown leather for my outfit today.

Naima_ROMA_bling.jpg
One feature that I was a little surprised about is shown here (see thumbnail). However, if bling ain’t your thing (and it sure ain’t mine!) Naiman is more than happy to provide a script that will remove it, free of charge.

I decided to wear it closed, with the white shirt and collar, a pair of classic black skinny jeans and high heels. I must just mention the shoes I’ve used in this look, by Cybele Pontoppidan. The first pair of shoes I ever bought in Second Life™, having camped and camped to save up precious Lindens, were a pair of Cybele’s boots and despite not being widely mentioned in the blogs she creates some of the best prim shoes there are (pre-sculpties). Even now I think non-sculptie footwear has it’s place and if you’re not already familiar, Cybele’s work is definitely worth a look. Finished with simple under-stated yet perfect pearl studs, this is a look fit for any would-be (SL)celebutante.

A Little Fun…

The looks I have created here were loosely based on two famous ladies, both with a very similar first name. For a bit of fun, the first person to correctly guess who they are supposed to be will win….. well, something :D A gift-certificate for my store perhaps – I’ll see what I can come up with. Write your answer in the comments section below and please include your full SL name if you would like the prize.

[Please note, this is merely a bit of fun and this competition is in no way endorsed by Second Style itself, so please, no drama :p]

In the melange that is SL fashion it can sometimes be hard to work out what’s hot, and what’s not. You can’t go wrong with a little black dress though, can you? Well, yes, you can (thinks of some of the nastily textured, overly skimpy and over-priced horrors she’s seen in far too many malls), but not with the three I’m going to show you today. These three will take you from day to night, from smart-casual thro’ formal to haute couture, and from absolutely free to outrageously expensive.

Click on image for full size

The first dress is from a designer that came to my attention just a few weeks ago through the Free*Style blog which featured her Peepcock Outfit. It was clear from then that Four Yip was a very talented designer and one to watch. Not only that, she hasn’t charged a single Linden for any of her outfits to date. Her most recent release is the Black Skull Dress which is available from the Free*Style HQ in Juicy. It come with a variety of attachments including this cute hat, a similar shoulder piece (not shown), two skirts, two chairs with pose (not shown) and the skull decollage dangle.

In these pictures I am also wearing my “favourite hair of the moment”, again from a designer I’d not heard of until recently but stumbled across whilst following up leads from the Free*Style blog (note to designers :: freebies work!). The Mermaid hair, shown here in my usual platinum blonde tone, isn’t free, but it’s mid-length messy curls perfectly frame the face for a casual modern look. I’d seriously recommend paying TEKUTEKU a visit, a hair designer to watch in my opinion.

This next dress, officially the sexiest dress in SL (according to me :p), I’m not sure I should really be telling you about as up until now it’s been MY secret. It’s one of those dresses which, when you look at the vendor image, really doesn’t jump out at you, so many of you I suspect have over-looked it. However, put it on, and WOW! It’s HOT.

Why am I getting so excited, you ask? There is a popular misconception amongst women (and men) that more flesh on show equals more sexy. This dress proves that wrong. From the front it looks incredibly demure. Classic and classy, obviously well made, but more suited to a nun than a sex-kitten. Turn around though and….. pheeewwww! Could that back BE any lower and still be legal? See the beautiful ruching of the skirt prim as it slides over the cheeks? Just perfect. Men just want to slide their hands down and…… let’s not go there ;-) I defy anyone to wear this dress and not turn heads.

Lastly, we can’t talk about fantastic black dresses without mention of what I consider to be the most fantastic dress I have seen in SL this year.

I saw it and snapped it up on SL Exchange before it had even reached the ears of the FashCon community, scrimping together every last Linden to afford it’s ginormous price-tag. However, in my eyes this isn’t just a dress, it’s a work of art. I’m afraid it is no longer available to buy, but check out Chambre Du Chocolat for some other exsquisite and unusual pieces of wearable art.

Talking of chocolate, have a good Easter everyone!

Skinkie-Style:: European Grand Tour

3

Who can resist Paris in the spring? Certainly not me! OK, not Paris, but Western France is my destination in a month or so’s time, and planning the trip has put me in the mood for European couture. And if it’s European-style you are after you need look no further than Frozen Turquoise Valentine, and designer Valenttina Carfagno.

I first became aware of Frozen Turquoise Valentine when FashCon opened to new designers in February. The quirky name and some eye-catching freebies put them firmly on my “must take a closer look” list. I bought a few items at that time, but it is Valenttina’s more recent releases that have really piqued my interest. I was thrilled then when she let me have a few to try on.

I have chosen three outfits to show you today, one casual daytime, one pretty evening wear, and one formal yet chic. With all three outfits I am wearing the Canimal – Essence (Lust)..of Simplicity skin, a review copy that Canimal passed to me a couple of weeks ago. These skins have been properly reviewed elsewhere, however I did not want their release to pass without comment. The skintones are beautiful, as one would expect from Canimal, but what stands out for me is the shading around the eyes which give real depth to the eye sockets. I wasn’t sure at first if this was something I liked, as it changes the way my face shape looks quite dramatically, but it has grown on me and is fast becoming a favourite.

The clothes called for a Mediterranean setting to do them justice so I headed to the lovely Rue d’Antibes in the early hours of the morning (courtesy of Torley’s wonderful windlight settings) to show them in their best light.

The first outfit, Carolina, comprises a dark purple plaid jacket, with scupltie collar and cuffs, teamed with a short black tulle skirt. The jacket comes on the shirt and system skirt layers only, which caused me some trouble when initially looking for a turtleneck to wear under it. However, it was by happy accident that I put on the jacket layer from Cubic Effect’s TunicDS for a funky layered look.

FTV Carolina 1024_1.jpg

It’s off to Italy for my second look, and Valenttina’s Venecia outfit. Feminine and flirty, this skirt and top are perfect for a warm spring evening stroll with your sweetheart, meeting up with friends for drinks outside the local cafe. The texturing, on the top especially, is beautiful, a slight shimmer reflecting the red of the skirt.

Rue_d__Antibes512.jpg

FTV_Orange_Black1024.jpg

My third outfit is Paris, the chicness of which lives up it’s name. The flirty layered skirt and cropped jacket are teamed with a feather and net hat to give a classy sexy look. Unfortunately the hat is no modify, so it doesn’t work with some hairstyles – it’s perfect with Armidi’s Milano hair though, which neatly fits on this tour.

I’m heading back to cold and misty England for now. At least the weather is better in Second Life!

Skinkie-Style:: It *is* nice to Sn@tch

Punk_Couture.jpg

Ivey Deschanel’s notices always begin with a warning, “do not read on if you are easily offended”, so it seems sensible as this post is about her designs, that I give the same advice. Some of her work does swing over the line separating good and bad taste, usually in a humourous way, poking a metaphorical tongue out at society norm’s. However, there’s absolutely nothing offensive about Ivey’s skills as a designer, her enthusiasm or her ability to say exactly what she means, and that’s what I love about her.

I had decided to do a blog piece about Sn@tch way before I ever spoke to Ivey, and only IM’d her because I read her rant about fashion blogs and was, quite frankly, not sure if she’d appreciate her work being Fashionista’d. When I told her my intentions though she was thrilled. Her moan isn’t against the blogs themselves, but that they contain the same few names time and time again whilst there is a tonne of talent out in the rest of the metaverse that never gets a mention. On the whole I share her view, although I think in most cases the high profile designers deserve the attention they get. Part of the problem has been finding out about these newer less well known talents. One has to go looking for them, something I know I don’t always have time to do. However, with the opening up of FashCon (thanks Honey, you rock!) this is becoming less so, and even though I am sometimes overwhelmed by the number of notices, I do take time to scan through them all, and follow up on those that stand out.

Sn@tch always stands out for me, not just because of the warnings, but because the clothes are really good. A combination of grunge, goth and punk, Ivey somehow also manges to inject chicness to her outfits and even, dare I say it, a little couture.

Punk.jpg

My friend, Noel Oh of A&F Photography turned up whilst I was doing the shots for this post, and before I knew it he’d dropped me his own take on this as shown below. His way of doing SL photography is completely different from my own, but I love the results he gets, as shown here.

SnatchCouture.jpg

These are just two examples of some great designs you can find at Sn@tch, I really was spoilt for choice when deciding which to feature. I would seriously recommend you check out the Barfly dress, Film Noir gown and La Petit Mort Top Hat, not forgetting of course the irresistible Chainsaw of Love – every girl should have one! It really IS nice to Sn@tch!

It’s rare that you’ll see me without my trademark platinum blonde locks, but an outfit I put together this week just cried out for some chocolatey goodness of the wigged variety.

OK, so I ended up with espresso rather than chocolate, but no matter, it still gives a good buzz.

Skinkie-Style :: Not So Wilted Wednesday

3

As the latest addition to the fabulous Fashionista team I thought I’d take a moment to introduce myself. From the UK in “real life”, and in SL for almost a year, I’m not sure I’d consider myself a “fashionista” and certainly NOT a “SLebrity” but I am a shopaholic and I love putting together different looks, be it casual, costume or couture. I appreciate good design and am of the belief that whilst I’m all for a freebie, quality rightly costs. Superb prim work and fine texturing don’t happen by chance – they take time, effort and practice which should be rewarded. That said, SL style need not break the bank, and many of my favourite finds have been free.

One of the key things to putting together a good look is, I believe, not overlooking the details. The right choice of make-up, nail polish, hairstyle and jewellery can make a dramatic difference and needn’t take a lot of time. Some key pieces, well organised and accessible in your inventory, can serve you well time and time again.

Each week, as well as bringing you my finds from around the grid (or the depths of my inordinately huge inventory) I hope to show you some of these key items and ways to use them. Today however, I will just show you…. me! This is the outfit that caught Celebrity’s eye and prompted her to ask me to join the team.

I spotted the shorts and tights on Caliah Lyon’s blog and fell in love with them. Teamed up with the top from Cubic Effect’s Tunic in red, Maitreya’s Dune boots and the Crocodile belt in black and bronze from Armidi it gives an everyday way to wear Kyoot Army’s Wilted Wednesday Vest without feeling out of place.

The snapshots are taken at Cherry Buttons, a beautifully designed shopping area that reminds me of summer at home here in England. I can almost hear the thwack of leather against willow as the local cricket team play on the village green behind me. Roll on summer!
