Group changes in 1.19
By Celebrity Trollop | January 13, 2008
A few weeks ago a bunch of blogs swarmed the Second Life issue tracker “JIRA” to help pump up the request for more than 25 groups. I’ve been following the traffic on the Second Life developer’s email list, and I thought you might want to read about some of the planned changes to group functionality forthcoming in 1.19.0 of the viewer. (Although based on followup developer traffic, 1.19.0 may be delayed by several weeks because the engineering team is reverting away from the web-based login some of you may have played with in the release candidate and/or Windlight client.)
According to an email made by Joshua Linden here’s some of what you can expect:
* 61 bug fixes
* “Voice 1.1″
** Introduces moderated to (formal) group voice and group text conversations
** Moderation ability applies to group owner and group officer roles
** Moderation will NOT apply to one-to-one text or voice chat, ad-hoc group conversation, or to spatial voice chat.
* Auto-joining group chat sessions has been removed
** Group members must explicitly choose to actively “join” their SL Group’s chat sessions after they log in.
** Starting a new SL group chat only adds the requester to the chat session much like an IRC channel.
In other words, it appears you’ll have to actively opt-in to group chat sessions instead of now where you can only “semi” opt-out by closing the chat tab when it pops up.
I am unsure exactly how group (text) chat moderation will work, but that also seems like a positive feature change from the current functionality.
What do you think?

I suppose it might kill some groups’ chat in terms of taking away the element of random, but this does make me more likely to join groups where people might talk to each other. If I can find room in my 25 alloted.
Posted by: Chav on January 14th, 2008 at 12:53 amAs someone who doesn’t like to have tons of tabs open in the chat window, or have the window obscuring my visual field, I hate the idea of having to “opt in” to chat sessions, just in case something comes up.
Posted by: Jordana Heron on January 14th, 2008 at 6:46 amI’m constantly responding in help chats when I know an answer, joining in-progress conversations in open chat groups. I really don’t want to have to open up a chat tab for every possible group where something could come up, every time I log on.
How hard is it to close the window if you aren’t interested? I can’t imagine that it’s harder than having to decide which ones you MIGHT want to open, when you ARE interested.
Hey, these are really good news ! Been waiting for this for long !! I want to part of certain groups to keep sharp on some info, but sometimes it really turns into a pain to close close close when you try to follow a conversation or you simply want to be quiet ! ty for the tip !
Posted by: camilla Yosuke on January 14th, 2008 at 8:41 amI’m with Jordana on this one. No way do I want to have all 24 of my groups open in IM “just in case”. That’s on top of the dozen or so one-to-one IM’s I’m likely to have open at a given time. Just not feasible.
Posted by: Efemera Bisiani on January 14th, 2008 at 10:22 amI feel the same way as Jordana and Efemera. I’m in a good number of groups that are designed as help forums for its members. How will I know if one of these groups is having a discussion in which I can either assist someone or a topic has been brought up from which I can learn? Sure I get annoyed when people spam group chat for groups that are there for updates only, but I just take 1 second to click the X and poof! it’s gone. It’s interesting that the Lindens are giving many of us something we never asked for and still ignore what all of us want, which is to increase the number of groups we can join. Is this some kind of diversionary tactic?
Posted by: Genna Gray on January 14th, 2008 at 10:54 amWow talk about breaking an already broken wheel. Here’s my 2 cents: What we need is unlimited “Chat Room Groups” with an on/off toggle switch (and more than 10 Roles), unlimited “Notification Groups” where chat is not possible and finally a limited amount and “Land Project Groups”.
Posted by: Autumn Heyse on January 14th, 2008 at 12:39 pmDefinitively good news, but they should put emphasis on permanently BANNING people from groups (so that they cannot return) and other Owner-related things like that. I am still happy for a positive change! :)
Posted by: elka on January 14th, 2008 at 1:47 pmYou know what group chat needs? Mute. That’s all. If you could simply mute chatty groups when you’re busy, or not otherwise wanting to hear it, the problem would be solved.
