Die bling die

20

I recently received some review copies of beautiful jewelry from Ellana, but several pieces had a bling script inside of them. If you didn’t already know, the official editorial position of Second Style about bling is “strongly disapproved.” But residents (for some reason) seem to love jewelry with bling. That means most every jewelry designer pops a bling script somewhere into his or her designs.

I decided to take 20 minutes and modify a common freebie bling script (apparently written by Lyra Walcott) and give it away free, as a means to have better (or no) bling in Second Life. I find my changes make bling much more tolerable for the rest of us.

For example, most bling scripts make the default as “bling on.” This one makes the default “bling off.” Another common trait of bling scripts is requiring the resident to turn off bling by saying “bling off” in world. This script uses a dialog box menu to turn bling on and off.

As I said, it’s free and the script inside the test object is full permission – so feel free to give it away, modify it further yourself, or just pull it from the test object and put it in your own designs. Perhaps politely encourage your favorite jewelry designer to start using it in her or his designs, if those designs include bling.

Get a copy here on OnRez for L$0.

I also started a new poll today about bling. I’m curious what readers think about bling in Second Life.

Bling is dirty and evil. What’s worse? Bling in first life – which LL endorses with its own brand of tacky jewellery.

I think I have about 100 jewelry items in my store and 3 have bling (made in the early days). I make it clear that assume my jewelry does NOT have bling. I never was a fan of bling and I think most people don’t care for it.

Not only is it on by default, it’s set to bling so often you blind everyone around you. A little subtly and something like your off by default / no public chat script would go a long way towards me just loathing bling instead of totally hating.

And while we’re having a Friday rant, what’s with shoes that come with bling, sound, walks – just about everything but the kitchen sink thrown in them? Why can’t I buy just the shoes or jewels without all the garbage?

The sounds on shoes! Ack! They are horrid. The first time I had a pair I was trying to figure out what that noise was.

LMAO… we are having an official editorial position on bling??? Girl… some things are so obvious.. it just doesn’t need to be discussed…. bling needs a grid wide IP ban.

@ Cherlindrea… that IP ban.. goes for the horse sounds on shoes too.Who made that up needs to be slowly tortured to death.

I lost an earring while trying to rip out bling scripts. Each earring contained 5 gems, and each gem contained a blinding bling script!!!! My Avatar’s head would disappear in a blinding bling cloud!!! It was only while interrogating the blasted bling script did I discover that by typing “/777 bling off” could i recover my eyesight!!!

Now as for those shoe sounds………………!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for saying my jewelry is beautiful. The script you modified is wonderful and I replaced the bling scripts in all of my jewelry to accomodate all of my customers. Again, thank you.

I HATE bling. HATE HATE HATE it. One reason is that even if you set the script to turn off bling it still takes up precious computing power and causes lag because it is sitting there waiting for you to want the bling turned on. I HATE IT!! I bought a lovely pair of shoes from ZHAO that unfortunately have bling – but I liked them so much I bought them anyway. I am about to tear my hair out because for the life of me the bling will not stay off no matter what I do!!!!!!! Not only am I trying to turn off the GD bling but the GD noise the shoes are set to make!!! Click click click!!!! Please stop this, Designers. I just want clothes. Plain clothes without sound effects or bling. Why would you mess up your products like this? I have NOT bought many many items because they contain bling. That’s money you didn’t get from me. And forget me ever buying ZHAO shoes again after this nightmare.

i love bling!!!! omg, it’s the new black, always has been always will be. bling is beautiful, bling is in, bling is blingerific, bling is so amazing that anyone who would hate such a thing must go bling off forever!

how could you hate a think like bling?

a kiss on the hand maybe quite sentimental but…
diamonds are a girls best friend!

and diamonds bling…

i want jewelry with “uber ultra bling”

please i beg you celebrity, make a script with bling you can never turn off..

would liz taylor wear bling? yes! would marilyn? yes! so love bling!!!

The 1st month that I was in SL I thought bling was kind of cool, though I hadn’t seen any of the bad examples of it yet.

The 2nd month I was in SL I started seeing some of the bad examples of bling and I thought, “Gee, that’s a bit overdone.”

The 3rd month I was in world I started seeing some of the worst bling. At that point I knew it had gotten pretty ugly.

I’m currently in the process of making my own line of jewelry, and I will never put any bling in anything that I make. The jewelry I’m making already has enough glitter and pop that it stands on it’s own.

Adding bling would just be overkill and would vulgarize something that’s already eye catching and pleasing to look at.

I like a little bling if there’s not too much of a crowd around and the bling is not too obnoxious. I have a pair of freebie shoes I love that have one jewel on them that sparkles periodically, and that’s all. However, I don’t think I would be terribly heart-broken if bling were banned.

Thank you so much for denouncing bling! I’ve been blinded by avatars with bling from ears toes. And diamonds don’t look like that. I have lovely shoes but the sign didn’t mention bling. I can choose from dozens of colors but can’t turn off the bling.
Bling is tacky and vulgar.

I like bling occasionally for everyday life. I have a beautiful jewelry set and it is nice. The bling goes to “sleep” after a bit and you have to detach and reattach the jewels if you want it back on. I can also disable the sleep bit.

I also happen to think the sound of heels is cool.

However i think the key to it all is control and moderation. I have a beautiful pair of sandals in 2 versions – one is named NB. It should be up to the wearer to decide what to use and what not.

In high lag places like fashion shows I want the possibility to decide to take all the bling and other attachments off.

…and the SLFP Citizen of the year award goes to “Celebrity Trollop”!!!

MUWAH!

A lot of blings for a lot of grey and sad “textured diamonds”…almost the only kinds in SL.
Not anymore :-) I just build the first reflecting and rifraction SL diamonds…they capture and reflect light like real gems… search “Gems & Fashion” if you want to se with your eyes;-)

Aren’t we being just a bit serious here? Lots of bling can be really funny. While I wouldn’t wear it myself, when I see an avatar covered in bling it makes me laugh and sort of cheers me up :-D And a little bit of bling can be pretty – it is possible to be too tasteful you know!

Creamy says…

“Diamonds are a girls best friend..BUT NOT IN SL!!”

Actually though, I do agree with Kitty that it’s quite entertaining when you see someone covered in the stuff.

When i first joined sl i liked bling.

When i started making jewellery i liked bling.

When i succeeded in creating a necklace that contained bling in every single chain hoop….
Oh….my…..gawd!!!!I was totally horrified as i realised i was blinding myself and everyone around…though my friends were too kind to tell me that…lol.

You know what the best part is?When i removed the sript from the hoops…it still blinged!!!Seriously whats up with THAT?

Anyway, i think i found a way to satisfy both bling lovers and haters…Dialog menu to change bling color for the first group…and just plain bling off for the second!
