New poll: What’s your favorite SL e-commerce site?
By Celebrity Trollop | October 5, 2007
I decided it was time for a new poll. I’m curious to know what your favorite Second Life focused e-commerce site is: OnRez or SLExchange. If you’re a fashion shopper, which one is a better shopping experience? If you’re a fashion designer, which one do you pick to showcase your items out-of-world and why?
Please vote and leave a comment if you like.

OnRez baby! Okay, before you say “ya, ya, of course you choose it you sheep, you!” I have always preferred SL Boutique (now OnRez) to SLExchange. I joined both in Nov of last year before the Big Brother Competition so that I could still get my shopping fix while on lock down.
The one major thing that makes me happy about OnRez vs .SLX is that I can refill my credit line instantly by simply paying Commerce Leader, which means I don’t have to hunt down a kiosk…and soon I won’t even have to be in world to refill as they are integrating PayPal. Plus, OnRez has always had a more appealing interface for me and I am all about looks.

Not even close. OnRez rules.
And over time I hope it becomes less cluttered, but compared to the competition it’s already super streamlined & search usually produces better results, though it could still use some work.
My one big complaint? Require accurate photos. No boxes w/ question marks. Or at least let me filter those out easily so I don’t even see them come up in the glut of results.
Posted by: Susan Reynolds / SL Tynan Clary on October 5th, 2007 at 10:25 amI used to prefer SLExchange because SL Boutique had a problem I just couldn’t come to terms with. But the new onrez is absolutely fantastic and I am planning on moving everything to OnRez. My one complaint about OnRez (which, isn’t the biggest deal in the universe but is a wishlist thing) is to allow pngs for inworld textures on vendors (last I tried that wasn’t allowed) since I do upload everything in png now that it’s available. OnRez has become sweet sweet merchant goodness to me.
Posted by: kesseret on October 5th, 2007 at 11:47 amAs a seller, there is no question: OnRez takes the cake. The batch edit options make listing multiple colors of items easy as pie. The inworld vendors they offer are perhaps the coolest part of all- once your items are listed on the web, getting them into a vendor is as simple as drag/dropping the items on the website into the vendor list, then clicking the vendor in world and selecting from a menu which vendor pack you want to use. No notecards!!
I was able to get about a hundred items live on the site and into vendors in world in just under an hour, my first time using the system. LOVE love love it. In addition, there is a searchable vendor available- if someone searches using it, it will return results from all my items that are listed on OnRez. Neat!
Plus there are no fees for sellers- that means that the seller doesn’t ever have to hike their prices to make up for losing part of their profit. As a shopper, I love that as well.
Slexchange is a good site, and has a lot of stuff to choose from, but I think that OnRez is really pushing the envelope for ease of use and in-world compatibility.
Posted by: Nephilaine on October 5th, 2007 at 11:53 amIf you asked me a few months I would have said SLX but lately it seems a bit drama prone.
I like the changes that OnRez has made but just like the above statements, I wish there was a better filter system when searching.
Posted by: Teagan Blackthorne on October 5th, 2007 at 12:11 pmOnRez because they have a sexy support chick! ;-)
Posted by: Jade Lily on October 5th, 2007 at 12:15 pmonrez has always looked better, but I use slx for purchasing and have all my items listed there. I used to have some on onrez (then slb), but the search was so bad that I never listed all the items. I may add my items again as it seems to be better.
Posted by: Dorra Debs on October 5th, 2007 at 12:21 pmNo questions … Hands Down … ONREZ!!!!!
Posted by: Dixie Starr on October 5th, 2007 at 12:52 pmOnRez is aesthetically-pleasing, reliable, easy to use, and is run by friendly, approachable staff. I’ve spent an ungodly amount of money shopping in SL in the last year and a half and couldn’t stand to do any of it online, until OnRez. It’s just a pleasure to browse and shop through it!
Posted by: Reina Quine on October 5th, 2007 at 12:58 pmOnRez looks SO much better! (I’m all about the looks too, TheDiva, haha! HI5) *And IT’S FREE!* It’s not as popular as SLex now tho. I make many many more sales on SLex unfortunatly, and there is a TON more items on SLex when you are looking for something unique… I really hope things will catch up because OnRez has an awesome customer service, awesome interface, awesome no-fee going on, awesome EASY way to set items up, AWESOME ALL!!!!! Plus, some staff at SLex is rude, how can you help a company like that? Haha! I think the fact that OnRez doesn’t have a forum makes it less drama-ish. Wich is a big great plus. Another tiny thing that I don’t like over there is that they formatted all the people’s name (I think they are working on that tho) so you cannot have the name you want to display. And the color combos for the storefronts are OOGLY. But I bet they will realize and change that soon as well :P Other then that, mmh, the search works super fine, but it does decided how it will place your tags, wich sometimes makes it look stupid haha. But overall, I like both for different reasons but OnRez takes my vote, even with less sales there’s just much more positive to them!
Posted by: elka on October 5th, 2007 at 1:23 pmIt’s weird, I was always partial to SLB/On-Rez because it’s always been so much easier to manage things but it seems more people go to SLX which is the only reason why I gave in and got it. Dunno!
Posted by: Violet Xingjian on October 5th, 2007 at 4:33 pmI still do the bulk of my shopping on SLX only because there is just more content. But…I have always preferred OnRez’s (and formerly SLB) interface and user friendly-ness. I hope more sellers will begin to use OnRez. When that happens, I will probably use it most of the time. Hopefully, they will also require sellers to post photos of the product which is the only real complaint I have.
Posted by: Solanghe Sarlo on October 5th, 2007 at 8:22 pmwow OnRez leading the poll 64% Vs. 36% ! :)
I’m both a designer and a shopper and I greatly prefer the cleaner and more user friendly interface of OnRez (which seems faster as well).
Having said that when I shop I rather use slex just because the amount of items is much larger, give enough time to OnRez to catch up with the old slboutique seller base and I think OnRez will definitely stand on top for shoppers and sellers.
The transactions history on OnRez is great too + ya get inworld vendors managed from one central location…go sheep!!!!
Oh…one more thing…no fees on OnRez :)
Posted by: Pompo Bombacci on October 6th, 2007 at 2:57 amI’m a buyer, and I prefer the interface of OnRez. Love the ability to favorite and the handy wallet, so I never have to find an ATM.
However, as a librarian and a buyer, the search functionality on both systems is appalling. Both seem to default to the Boolean OR, which brings up far too many irrelevant results. If they could at the very least figure out how to enable searching by phrases in quotation marks, that would be a start.
I use ‘em both because they’re both better than the inworld classified, but there’s definitely room for improvement…or an usurper, if they could lure enough sellers.
Posted by: Meg Kribble / Anne Idler on October 7th, 2007 at 1:08 pmI’m a designer and buyer. I much prefer OnRez, appart from the good looks it is very user friendly, and have never had any bother buying or setting up sale items on it’s web site. Unfortuniately, I sell most of my stuff at SLX. :^(
Posted by: Roxette Wise on October 8th, 2007 at 12:02 amnever liked sl boutique, couldn’t quite do it…

p.s. i am the most uh, computer challenged person, i don’t even know how to do a slurl… and putting up my first piece was EASY!!!
yay!
Posted by: callie cline on October 8th, 2007 at 4:01 pmNot using either at the moment and am very reluctant to have vendors on sim due past experience with lag and server vendors.
Posted by: sachi Vixen on October 8th, 2007 at 5:14 pmHmm, I went with SLX as a year ago a similar forum poll showed more sales there, now it would seem the tables are turning except the comments here still say more sales on SLX!
But on the search, in SLX at least it’s wonderful, it works just like making Yahoo like Google, + is your friend…
+latex +racerback
/me giggles, that’ll only get you certain listings! ;-) (A page and a half instead of 80 pages… LOL)
Posted by: Crystal Falcon on October 9th, 2007 at 9:57 pmIn terms of layout, yes, onrez, they just need to fix:
- The vendor hack issue (60 seconds work with an alt, and you can get anything for free right now). I wish they’d just sort this and wipe the smile off the faces of those passing the hack round the grief forums.
- Payment problems. I gather that about 1 in 7 payments out of onRez right now is failing. Whilst some might find the having to manually double check and chase everything amusing, I’d rather it just worked first time.
- The website speed. This is partly due to the problems the onRez database inherited from the old SL Boutique database, which the speed of implementation of the new onRez service meant there wasn’t time to fix.
If they fix those three issues, they’ll wholeheartedly get my vote.
