Shai’s Roots

By Grazia Horwitz | July 3, 2007

Yes, Shai Delacroix is one of my dear friends in SL and yes I love to blog her designs. Does that make me biassed? I truly think that this kick ass girl is one of the best designers currently active in SL. I only recently learned that Shai is making her textures using the old fashioned Logitech mouse instead of a Wacom. I have loved her work ever since I first laid eyes on it last October, but knowing this has impressed me so much. I’m not even able to draw a decent path in Photoshop.

terno_001.jpgAnyway, when Shai about 2 weeks ago dropped her Filipiniana gowns on me it filled me with exitement. They are absolutely stunning. I honestly can’t tell you which one I like best. Look at the awesome creations on her blog, and read the stories about the women that have inspired her. Let me show the the Traje de Mestiza Terno, which at  the moment I think is my favourite. Tomorrow it might be the Imelda Terno.. or one of the others though since they are all just plain gorgeous. I love the colour of the skirt. It’s not green, it’s not teal.. it’s a bit like a tropical ocean on a stormy day. The prim work is great too, the panuelo… never saw something like that before.. I love it and although the skirt is just 11 prims… it flows lovely. I think it’s wonderful that this effect can be created with a limited amount of prims. In this photo I wear it with Curio’s Snood hair and Tête à Pied’s Juillet. The jewelry is Miriel’s Sultana.

terno_002.jpgShai loves the beach, and it shows in her recent beach wear. Her latest is the boho bikini series, which comes in a range of vibrant colours like turquoise and fuchsia that are just right for a hot summer’s day. Over the strapless bikini, she has made a sheer, beaded tunic that can be worn with far more than just the bikini. She’s also working on a totally delicious one piece bathing suit that has some awesome adornments on the neckline and the back. I hope she will release it soon. It’s totally classy and luxurious. Watch the blogs because I’m sure it will hit hard. The above designs are all available at Shai’s flagship store in Deco. The hair is ETD’s Sea Nymph, and the skin is Lovey’s Cafe in caramel skintone. The earrings are Kailena, Caliah Lyon’s latest release.

  1. Am I not supposed to be using a Logitech mouse? =o

  2. “Yes, Shai Delacroix is one of my dear friends in SL and yes I love to blog her designs. Does that make me biassed?” You forgot to answer your question. Let me help: YES, yes it does. You might as well partner her for all the fawning you do over her in this post. But then you couldn’t marry Roslin Petion. Decisions, decisions. “It’s totally classy and luxurious. Watch the blogs because I’m sure it will hit hard.” I definitely know one blog that will blog it, along with whether or not Shai has passed gas lately. Great big giant world out there, thousands of designers, glad we have a blog to keep track of just 12 of them.

  3. haha Lux.. you are supposed to use everything you want and need.. I was just surprised to learn that Shai “mouses” as her textures are so incredibly detailed and elaborate. A lot of designers use a wacom these days, so i just supposed she did too. :-)

  4. Oh Yawn, I just love your constructive contribution. Too bad you don’t have the good nerve to post under your own name… maybe you are not appreciative of any feed back? I’m always open for suggestions though, so if you know that hot new designer that will be then next big thing in SL fashion… please let me know, preferably on a notecard with a LM and some piccies in world and I’ll be on top of it. Oh, but that would mean you have to reveal who you are.. so I guess that is not going to happen.

  5. Wait, aren’t YOU the blogger? Isn’t it YOUR job to get off your duff and go look for stuff rather than wait for your friends to send you new things they’re working on, assured that they’re going to get several paragraphs on it. As for who I am, it doesn’t really matter. I’m not big enough for you to have heard of and I’m not on your friends list, so I pretty much don’t exist anyhow, right?

So you can address the problems your blog has, basically that it’s a glad-handing, friend-praising bit of fluff, or you can pretend it’s all about my anonymity. I know the latter is easier. Lastly, I know you’re just writing about fake clothes in a fake world, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have to try.

  6. Dear Yawn, I am obviously lacking in your opinion, so please help me out. Make yourself known and stun me with your designs and I will be happy to blog you. It is true, having a RL that is actually pretty time consuming.. damn mortgage…. and all the new designers that have entered the grid, it is easy to overlook a gem amidst the masses. However, whining anonymously is not going to help you, or me for that matter, so either let your mask down and show me what you are worth or just ignore my scribblings if they bother you. After all, it is NOT my job, it is a mere hobby. Off for tonight. Looking forward to hear from you. Ciao!

  7. Shai makes such beautiful clothes…they remind me of outfits you find in some grand artist’s painting :)

  8. Sorry, not a designer, just a shopper. I can’t even make a plywood cube. My only qualifications are as a shopper and a reader and I expect a blog about SL fashions to actually dig up new and interesting stuff. And I don’t mean brand new designers, but things from people other than your stable of favorites. I walk through all these great sims with all these great shops and I wonder why they never get mentioned once, but when it’s someone who Everyone knows of, they garner multiple posts a month. But I guess you don’t have time to actually address my concerns, or make an effort. That clears that up. I’d be happy to meet you in world to discuss further, but I’d rather avoid the ire of the mob, thanks.

  9. Grazia, you failed to address my co-Yawn’s point. You failed to acknowledge that nepotism plays a part in who you feature and what you feature the most. Tete a Pied, Casa del Shai, Miriel, Nicky Ree, and several other “friends” of yours get mentioned far more than they do on any other blog. And they’re mentioned here far more than any other designer’s work. Read your archives. If you don’t believe either of us, then you’re clearly as daft as your writing implies you are. You could say “oh, wait, that’s because they’re amazing talent!” And you’d be right that they’re a talented group of people. But there are many many more offerings similar to their range of execution and style on the grid. And there are still plenty of designers who are superior in style and technical ability. So your case for not exhibiting very visible bias gets weaker and weaker. In one of the biggest most diverse weeks of fashion releases (view Daisyblue’s roundup at Linden Lifestyles), you chose such a predictable round of things to review. Now go ahead and reply about how you’re tired of anonymous people bashing you. And I hope you feel good about it. But just be honest about the truth. And that truth is that SecondStyle has just become a wading pool where every starfucker and fawning designer in SL gets a turn at taking a piss on one another.

  10. Yawn, let me tell you about the truths of the fashion blogger life:

Time for SL (and SL related things) is finite
    Resources for SL are finite.

As much as I (and others) would love to spend the time to search the grid endlessly for new stuffs and buy everything, we simply can’t. Which is one reason why I encourage people to join blogs or start up new ones. There’s so much to cover.

But I really don’t do reviews anymore.

Yawn, if you think designers/stores are being overlooked send bloggers LM’s and notecards. If someone sends me a heads up about some place new I’ll check it out given the time and will mention it to others. We need folks like you to help keep us informed, we can’t be everywhere or read everything.

  11. Shai’s heritage collection are some of the most beautiful and dignified designs I’ve seen in SL - friend or not - and she deserves recognition for bringing something different to the palette of in-world fashion.

It seems that Yawn’s anonymous comments are less directed at Shai’s work and more at the blogger who has a right to express her views, opinions and tastes here. She is, after all, a contributor here for that precise reason.

Bloggers take their unpaid personal leisure time to cover any given subject. SL is immensely vast. There are thousands of people creating content that doesn’t get blogged. To coolhunt a fraction of those would be more than a full-time job.

Are you looking for problems or solutions? If you see an opportunity to fill a niche in SL fashion blogging, Yawn et al, register for a Blogger or Wordpress account, add your site to Fashion Planet’s feed by emailing Tao Takashi and start posting to let the community know about all the phenomenal content you see around you.

    Good luck.

  12. *yawns* Wow, an anon attacking a blogger for blogging about some people more than others, *SO* original. First of all, I second what everyone else has said so far. I’d also like to say that I’m glad you mentioned Linden Lifestyles and DaisyBlue. She always makes for a fun read and I love that blog. I do have some sad news for you though, both Miriel and Shai were posted about in her latest roundup. Oh and she mentions Tete in the round pretty much every single time we’ve had a new release. So I guess you are going to have to get busy and start posting hate comments over at LL too now, right? I seriously would LOVE to go on and on but I’ll try to follow Grazia’s good example and comport myself with the same grace and dignity. The most important thing of all is this, Grazia is a wonderful, supportive friend, and one of the sweetest and most adored fashionistas on the grid. Attacking her doesn’t make that less true.
