Downtown Grand Opening on May 5th
By Grazia Horwitz | May 5, 2007
Today I went to take a sneak peek at Downtown, a brand new sim that will rock you fashion lovers and probably will ruin your Linden Dollar balances.
Opening May 5th, Downtown is a mix of commercial and residential; a kind of pixel vision of Brooklyn. Majestic and old with clean street layouts, working subway/elevated train line and lots of rooftops to run across. There’s a main street lined with stores, Chinatown, bookstores, brownstones, city parks, record stores and old-timey diners to start with. With brownstones and apartments for rent and almost 30 shops of the best and brightest designers on the grid — specializing in retro, ruined, urban and just plain great styles — Downtown is your perfect place to live and shop and fall asleep at your keyboard in.
Designers:
Back and Forth, Lucid, Tres Blah, dirtchild, Tohru’s Shop, Surf Couture, Electric Jane’s (formerly Happy Junk), The Young Urban, Pushbutton Industries, Gear Shift, Brutal Gears, Civvies, Truth, Renegade, Marly’s, Happy Bivouac, BroGear, Fade Dana, Accessory Arsenal, Miw, Form, Hey Joe’s and a few surprises we’ve yet to unleash.
Grand opening events start at noon SLT and going til Midnight SLT, so that everyone will have the chance to come over and have a look. DJ’s will be spinning and the owners and vendors also promise clowns with balloon animals (no, seriously), jugglers, probably a few naked people with oblivious prim erections (is it a party without them?), scavenger hunts and giveaways galore.
Now, about that scavenger hunt: it will consist of 50 special highfalutin golden ticket type doodads. First person to get 50 wins 5,000L for a shopping spree in one of the 23 stores that are currently Downtown. 2nd place gets 2,500 and 1K to the bronze. Runners up will get giftbags loaded with stuff!

I’m going to have to take your word on this one. I went there four different times and the lag was so bad I could hardly get around. Most of the sim stayed grey, too. I couldn’t see the merchandise. :(
I think I’ll give it a week or so and try back again.
Posted by: Sioban on May 5th, 2007 at 5:37 pmI only just learned of the sim recently. A friend was assisting with a vehicle script so I was able to participate in the trial run of the subway last week. The train itself is very impressive. Flopsie McArdle creates some of the best items seen in SL. I haven’t yet seen any other parts of the sim. I crashed within a couple of minutes the two times I tried to go on Saturday, but what I did see looks very well done. The sim stands as a testiment to what a community of friends can accomplish. With a supportive network assisting each other and sharing skills and information they have achieved what the lone individual can only dream of. Good luck to them all.
