Newbie starter kit at MAIA
By Celebrity Trollop | February 12, 2007
Trinitee Trilam of recently renamed Refuge (and ETD model!) posted an article about the “Denoobification” Process. In the post, she suggests
[W]ouldn’t it be great to sell a Noob kit? Like for men and women.. different styles but these be exclusive products just for them at a price that they could afford… or i should say.. their mentor/helper/person can afford without having to skip all over the grid? I would LOVE to do this.. but I can’t make hair really nor do I wish that upon any poor noobs head… I can’t make skins… Clothes I can do.. but no shoes or ao for me. I dunno if this thought will ever come into play but if any designers wanna partner up with me.. maybe we can come up with a couple awesome denoobification kits.
I was really taken with the idea and I threw it out to a couple of different content creators for consideration, but I didn’t really push too hard on it. (Magazine deadlines will do that to a worthy cause.)
A few weeks later, Maia Blackthorne created the beginnings of a really nice little kit — along the lines of what Trinitee’s talking about — 3 modify OK shapes, 2 pairs of eyes, 2 skins (in medium and tan), a top and some jeans sold together for L$50 to avatars under 30 days old.
To realize the total kit, a newbie would have to find her own hair and a pair of shoes — so anyone who makes poses, shoes or hair want to step up and complete this kit? If you want to help out, send a note to Maia Blackthorne. She’d be interested in hearing from you.
I personally like Maia’s skins — they’re not airbrushed perfection — they have pores and freckles and moles. But if that’s not your thing, I also tried the shapes out with different skins by creators like Ambyance2 Anubis, Lost Thereian, Starley Thereian, Canimal Zephyr, Portia Sin, Second Skin Labs and they all looked pretty good. This kit would be a great base to denoobify your next SL beginner.

I’m actually getting stuff together for newbies too, although not in the same way (as goods). I’m collecting information about newbie-friendly places and I’m compiling it so I can do a “fashion tour” of sorts for newbies. I’m just getting it organized and have mainly done it for friends, but I was planning on branching out with it and possibly leaving a notecard at Free Dove and the GNUbie Store and some other newbie-friendly places. Basically I take them to stores that have stuff specifically for newbies under 30 days or that are very budget-friendly. (I’m also planning on doing custom tours that are focused on themes, like “formal night”, “clubbing!” “relaxing” and such, where I take people around to places to help ‘em get make-up, clothing, hair, etc. for a small fee. I figure that I shop enough, might as well use my talent to help others, too!) Newbie tours, of course, would be free and I’m going to make up a list of landmarks in a notecard with instructions on basics (explaining what skins and shapes are, how to wear hair, what are prims, etc.) for them, or just linking them to my Web site, where I’ve tried to start a comprehensive database of shops in SL.
Yes, I have far too much time, I know.
Thank you for providing such great information on what’s new out there!
Posted by: Delfina Vacano on February 12th, 2007 at 9:20 pmI know it really doesn’t count as a “kit” but, as someone who helps newbies frequently, and on a budget…(and zOMG! ty for this kit!!) there are the newbie hairs at Gurlywood, free for under 30’s, the very very inexpensive hair at ETD (starter hairs for 10L a pack and newbie “free” hair for 1L a pack) Diversity does a newbie hair free I believe, tete a pied has a newbie starter skin set of 6 skins free for under 30’s in both male and female versions, Nevermore has the MOST amazing eyes for 25L a set. Maybe, with designers permission, even putting in a notecard with LM’s to places like these? Just a thought.

CT,
On the subject of helping people starting out, i am looking to help up and coming designers, (I can provide free vendor / mall space - and i mean free as in nil cost!). So if you want somewhere to put the ‘denoobify’ kit so people can pick it up, more than happy to volunteer some prims…

Posted by: Zal Chevalier on February 13th, 2007 at 4:31 amI have been doing newbie tours for new volunteers on Info Island. Thanks for mentioning this kit.
I find that a lot of times folks aren’t -30 because they signed on, hit lots of barriers (network issues, etc) and then didn’t get back on until someone helped them out… by which time they aren’t under 30 days old anymore. *sigh*
The new -30 Sin Skins newbie pack is not bad for skins for those females who qualify. Haven’t found a good starter pack for guys yet..
There are nice things available to at least get rid of newbie hair - Nuclear Boutique’s proton ponytails are some of the nicest moving prim hair I’ve seen and the L$5 Panache dos are great too. (Available at their stores or Free Dove). Wilted Rose has nice inexpensive offerings for those with a goth aesthetic.
It would be great to have a group for those who do fashion tours so that we could share info!
Posted by: Rosmairta Kilara on February 13th, 2007 at 9:40 ami started a newbie program out of inspiration from six’s hair program giving newbies any outfit they wanted from my shop (under 500) throught it i was able to meet a lot of cool people and most all the people i have given outfits to were very happy and kind.
unfortunatley with SL bugs, inventory losses, etc, i newbies spelling their av names wrong, etc, i was not always able to get people their outfits, as either i had not gotten the notecard, or something else.
i have been thinking of another way to give newbies a “welcome gift” and this is a cool idea. i think i’ll try it!
thanks for sharing it!
xoxo,
caLLie
p.s. if you have sent in a notecard, i just got back a LOT of my notecards and am going through them NOW… so expect your outfit shortly!
Posted by: callie cline on February 13th, 2007 at 5:46 pmI hope there is a package put together. I volunteer for 2 different organizations that help noobs and I had something like that to share with them, they would be so happy! Also, I hope there is a mens pack as well….they have such a hard time already!

Posted by: coeur Gorky on February 14th, 2007 at 8:20 amHearts Enchanted have a Newbie store called Beginners Luck ( its in find) They have 2 girl starter kits and 2 guy starter kits for 50 L each. The proceeds of the kits go back into the money tree on the island.
The kits inclue . Hair, skin, eyes, shape, cloths, shoes and jewlery, the guys has a basic Ao, and there is a free Ao for girls in the shop.
All the contents of the pack are collected from Freebies or donations and all known creators acknowledged.
I have a set of landmarks and instructions that I give out to newbies.
My set is SinSkins, Gurl 6, and HCT (4 1L styles including one that is your basic long hair), FreeDove and the GNUbie store. And a landmark back to the welcome area and to the L Word, since that’s where most of my newbies are from (they have their own newbie pop and tutorial).
Having walked through this with a bunch of people, I can’t say how much it helps people. They get some “breathing room” to learn the game without spending money on things that they might not like so much. Thanks to everyone who does this!!!
