I Bring You Tidings of Great Freebies

By Iris Ophelia | December 18, 2006

It’s been a few months, but while I’m on my winter vacation from the collegiate grind Celebrity’s given me a place to scratch my blogging itch, and we’re going to get the ball rolling with some stocking stuffers that won’t break your holiday brandy budget.

These are just a few of the freebies you can pick up at Shy Neon, Random Calliope’s modest shop/studio. While some (not most, I apologize) of the jewelry does have a Gorean market in mind (the earring shown, “Kef”, comes in three traditional kajira silk colours, for instance), they have a fantastical flavour that could translate just as easily into casual day-to-day wear. Also shown is the necklace from “But I’m Not the Only One”, and the necklace and headpiece from “Slither” (which has a gazillion colour combinations and comes in a Free to Copy golden cobra).

Categorizing the style, these pieces in particular are in the same abstract to art nouveau vein as Miriel Enfield or Jackal Ennui’s respective jewelry work. These stunning creations are at least 95% primwork, with incredibly precise detailing. I especially love the graceful curls in the Slither set… And yes, they are free. Well, L$1 per set, and I can’t imagine that would put anyone off!

  1. Actually I don’t think most of Random Calliope’s jewelry has a Gorean market in mind. There is only one set that is for a kajira, but the rest of his jewelry has ranged from Mata Hari to Mars in inspiration, each piece highly detailed and such tiny tiny prims! His limited edition necklaces (only 10 of each) are highly sought, so joining his group is worth it for the rare announcement of a new limited edition (often by the time I log in and hear about it only one is left).

Tip–follow the clues that start in his shop to the Crescent Moon Museum Ballroom for a totally free Mata Hari jewelry set of necklace, earrings, ring, armband, belly jewel, and bracelet, IF you can find them. They’re truly exquisite pieces of wearable art!

  2. Thank you so much for putting me onto Random Calliope’s work - days after picking up enough jewelry to keep me feeling pretty for a year, I am still glowing from the encounter I had with the artist while I was there.

Such a pleasure to meet someone who cares so much about his creations - and it shows in every single tiny, lovingly placed prim - and in the people who wear them. He made me feel very special and I am reminded of his kindness each day as I select which of my new goodies to put on now.

And then I switch them out just so I can stare some more at the beauty of the work itself. This isn’t bling - no highbeam flashes shouting ‘lookit me!’ Just pure elegance and beauty and incredible detail in both the work and in the placement (rings that fit just right without needing to edit - nirvana). I can’t believe how many compliments I’ve gotten on it since I started wearing his work.

He also carries a couple men’s items that I will be going back to pick up as gifts very soon. I bought his monacle for my partner and now I’m zooming the camera up close on his face to admire that as well.

For those that enjoy any of the period sims, this is the jewelry you want - its classic refinery is just the thing needed to complete your look, whether it’s ancient Rome or Victorian Caledon, or deco.

I know I’m gushing, but I just can’t say enough about this jewelry or the artist who creates it. I am smitten!

  3. Random’s latest work, Slither, is his fourth free gift to the residents of SL. Slither is elegantly casual, and truly a delight. As sick as I was getting of it at one point (after helping with the photography and promotion primarily), I still found that I could wear Slither pieces with any outfit I chose. It’s truly amazing stuff. I’m really glad to see such an excellent article written on it.

Random’s artwork - which also happens to be jewelry - is 100% primwork, with no scripts or textures used at all. The styles vary from casual (Ever So Slightly) to art noveau (But I’m Not The Only One, La Dida) to elegantly formal (The Etiquette of Charm, Gatsby, Trapeze) to Gorean (Rarius). Trying to classify his work in any one genre is just not possible.

I hope everyone who reads this will visit one of Random’s shops to check out his artwork and also to pick up a copy of Slither for free. Give Slither to your friends and foes alike - with 24 sets to fit, it will keep them ALL busy for awhile. :)
