Checking in with Solange Cerveau

I first wrote about Solange Fashions back in August. The outfit I reviewed was a silk named “Persia” which caught my eye on a fellow customer who had been shopping at ETD. I occasionally pop over to keep an eye on what’s new, especially on outlets where following releases through a blog is difficult. This time it was an outfit that Queenie Extraordinaire featured on her blog — an outfit which I will talk about in another post. But while I was at Solange I had a bit of a shopping accident. That’s where all of these silks came from — and while Solange hasn’t released a new silk for a while (not feeling the inspiration she told me in IM), her previous body of work is substantial and tremendously sensual. Shown right is “Heat” in Snow, and on the other side is the “stand alone” lingerie package of Solange’s party dress named “Elegance” (which is also featured in another forthcoming post.) One of the most remarkable things about Solange’s designs is that she’s an expert at incorporating really beautiful details on actual clothing layers (as opposed to texturing a prim.) Oh sure, she’s very good at making prim attachments look pretty and sexy too, but as a rule I don’t normally care for “jewelry on the jacket layer.” Solange proves that sometimes an exception to a rule is a good thing. Because of my shopping spree I have a lot of Solange designs to write about — but they’re a bit spread out because thematically it just worked out that way.

Here are two more silk designs. The picture on your left is a mish-mash of related outfits, India and India 2. And the design on the right is named “Peacock.” Another common thread that runs through Solange’s creations is the rich color palette she uses. There is a time and a place for rich, deep saturated color, and another for muted softer pastels. When you’re wearing a virtual gossamer thread of silk that’s maybe 25 pixels wide, that’s the point where you want your colors to stand out. I make homemade ice cream and if there’s a single rule about making ice cream carry a flavor, it’s to use strong flavoring agents. The tongue’s ability to detect taste is hampered by the temperature of the food, so to make something truly minty, or chocolatey or full of vanilla means you need to amp up that flavor. When dealing with silks, colors are carried by not a lot of pixels — each one counts, and that’s why these vibrant colors remain so gorgeously constrated with the underlying skin tone in each photo.
Solange started a blog to help keep her customers informed about what’s going on in her store — and right now she’s been hiding tiny L$1 holiday presents in her store. For example, holiday gift #2 is the complete Persia outfit I blogged way back in August. So stop by and cam around — there are a lot of treasures to be had at Solange Fashions, both in her vendor posters and in tiny little presents.
