Week in Review 10.16.06: Accessories
By Choice Sliter | October 15, 2006
What I love about doing these Week in Review columns, is that it allows me to bring attention to items that I spotted during the week, but may not have gotten a chance to highlight for you in a longer article. And, admittedly, there is some sort of closure created for me when I can look at the previous week and write about what happened under some unifying theme. Yeah, it’s metaphysical and probably silly to some, but I honestly believe that frequently all creatives are tapping into the same wavelength and it’s fun for me to discover and reveal the themes I find. That said, there wasn’t one theme that jumped out for me, but rather an item category. This week, a lot of great energy was put into creating accessories, those finishing touches that take an outfit from good to great. And in this column, I present the stand out releases for you.
5ith Order: ~Zero City~ Pince Nez Sunglasses
These unisex sunglasses from Johnny Dusk are ultra modern and and shiny. I like their clean design and hint of comic book evilness. Johnny offers several lens and frame variation. My favorites are Nior and Magma. These are perfect shades to wear when you are hiding from the paparazz, or you just want to make others wonder what you’re up to. View designer’s post. W=N, R=N, F=N
Abergris Deadly Fashions: Requiem
These sexy and ghoulish delights, created by Sylfie Minogue, just might be the perfect companion to this dress by Material Squirrel. I am so loving the idea of using actual bones as a skeletal structure for he shoe. While I’m not totally enamored with the spider on the foot vamp, the fetishistic image created by the boney fingers circling the ankle like bondage cuffs, makes me forget about them. A highly imaginative shoe, perfect for vamps, goths, or those who play one for Halloween. And like many items introduced this month, this is only available until November 4th. View designer’s post. Cailyn’s: Looped
I love, love, love when designers are inspired by each other and do something creative as a result. With that I bring you an adorable and playful jewelry set from Cailyn Miller. This is an adorable necklace, earring, and bracelet set that is made from multi-colored, linked circles. The set reminds me of the candy necklaces that were popular when I was a kid, but its real inspiration comes from Camie Cooper’s rainbow tank tops. The set is playful and fun with an incredible, plasticky texture. Notice how the highlights are on one side on the bracelet, making the prim appear to be beveled only on one side? Lovely work, indeed. View designer’s post. W=N, R=N, F=N
Gritty Kitty: Scarves
Noam Sprocket has gotten into an autumn mood and brings us a necessary winter accessory, but interpreted as only he can. These scarves come in three variations and are scripted to change patterns. My favorites are the Stripey and the Patterned. These are grungy, muted colors that suggest either post-apocolyptic, nuclear winter. They are the only scarves that I’ve seen this season that are perfectly unisex, and are limited to a single gender by size or color palette. and, they are sold individually, so you don’t have to buy a clothing set or coat in order to get one of these lovely accessories. Material Squirrel: Storm and Forest Fronds
The wings that I nicknamed Forest Fronds are not the only pretty wings that Kala Bijoux introduced on the forums this week. Another fiery set, called Storm, also caught my eye. Now many may consider wings to be a body part and not an accessory, but for me they are like shoes or a handbag. The right set with the right outfits makes a huge impact. What I love about this pair is their fiery shape and translucency. The colored versions are are beautiful, especially the teal. These are so different from the more typical butterfly and dragonfly designs. View designer’s post. W=N, R=N, F=N
Nocturnal Threads: Umbrella (Fire)
This vibrant red umbrella, brought to us by kaia Ennui, is part of the GingerDead collection. There is a matching raincoat, which I think is a must have to go with the umbrella, but this column’s focus is accessories. Besides it’s beanie-like shape and satiny texture, what I love most about this umbrella is that it plays rain soundswhen you wear it. This takes it from being just a cool accessory to mood-enhancing attachment. I am thoroughly enjoying the GingerDead comic and the clothing line and can’t wait to see what other directions the little guy pushes Kaia in. View designer’s post. W=N, R=N, F=N
Skin Deep: Angelic Wings
Polly Pavlova brings us a celestial take on wings with this Angelic Wings release. These wings are long and frond-like, similar to peacock feathers. They cascade gently from the back and look glamourous and dramatic. These are more photo-real than illustrated in appearance, and as a result they have a completely different feel than Storm. But it’s their frond-like quality that really stood out for me. These are pretty, feminine wings for your ethereal side. View designer’s post. W=N, R=N, F=N
turnstyle: Earrings and Bangles
Update [CS]: turnstyle now has a location in world: Imjin (232, 140, 398).
Kingston Augustus had several fantastic releases this week of his her new brand of kitschy jewelry called, turnstyle. While not all of the releases have been purely kitsch–like the adorable Chinese takeout box earrings–even the more serious pieces have fun names (Choco-Bloo bangles, for example). I was immediately attracted to the styling of Kingston’s ads and the almost Japanese simplicity of even the most pop art pieces (see the fanta can earrings in the forum ad). The huge downside (for me at least) is that right now these items are not available in world, only through SL Boutique. According to his her latest posts, he’s she’s working on getting a store space. As soon as that happens, you will want to tp over and grab these delectable pieces. View designer’s post. W=N, R=N, F=N
Tweet: Ami Plaid Umbrella
I can tell from Sumire Mochi’s latest blog post that she is starting to get a little confidence in her design ability. When I met her a month ago, she was so shocked that anyone would like her designs enough to want to write about them. while I insisted that the look of her items was so cute an unique how could someone not want to write about them. But I guess we have something in common. any time someone tells me they read my posts on this blog, I have a hard time getting my head around it. anyway, to make a long story short, I am so happy that the umbrella Sumire gave me a sneak peak at in our meeting is finally out. I love the plaid and the various cotton candy colors. It looks great with her clothes. Each set comes with a coordinating, plaid, prim scarf. A precious accessory for the little bird or little girl in us all. View designer’s post. W=Y (beta version), R=N, F=N

glad to be in the company of sumire and you, choice, about ppl reading/buying, our stuff, lol.
with all the choices out there, it’s hard to sometimes understand what others see in our stuff that we don’t. not that i don’t think my stuff is nice, (if i didn’t i certainly would NOT put it out) but to think it appeals to others as well is SO cool!!!! it’s like something i created, was appealing enough for them to spend money on AND wear!!! that’s so cool! and of course, if it makes them feel good, puts a smile on their face, etc, then that’s the best….
so, i understand both of you, and choice, you blog and write really great ;), and sumire, your stuff is so cute, i’ve been planning to make a cartoon version of callie just so i can wear it! so.. ty both and keep up the great work ;)
xoxo,
caLLie

Though the name Kingston may be masculine in nature, the creative mind at work behind the kitschy, quirky jewelry of turnstyle is not.
You referenced her as a him incorrectly. Just wanted to bring that factoid to light for future reference. :)
Please continue with your great work!
