Paper Couture puts the C in couture
By Choice Sliter | October 28, 2006
Sigh. After weeks and weeks of reading the House of Lu blog, I missed the opening of Paper Couture for Fall ‘06. I love it when designers realize that our relationship with a brand is fed by many things, including quirky tales of fictional paeoti mishaps written on a company blog.
Sadly, I have yet to sample these good for myself and won’t get a chance until the husband finishes slaying Murlocs in his world. But, I did get a chance to peruse some of the Spring ‘06 merchandise earlier this week. As well as take a thorough crawl through their new online catalog. Whether you are trapped out world like I am, or just want to view the line in a different medium, I definitely recommend visiting their site.
What impressed me about the line is first and foremost the accessories, namely the shoes. They are each unique, edgy, and look like they would be painful in real life. That is what couture shoes are, and at US$500 a pair, they are usually fun to admire, but not worth the pain. But in Second Life, my feet never hurt. Make a 6 inch heel out of solid wood and I won’t feel a thing. There are many beauties in this collection, one will be hard pressed to not buy at least one pair. The jewelry and handbags are also worthy collections. I loved the PC Signature bracelet which features a logo bangle and diamond line bracelet. I also adored all of the earrings.
But where the true couture feeling is created is in the clothing collection. These are runway pieces in runway proportions, with a strong designer presence. These are not pieces created for the customer. Like their companions at the houses of Dior or Chanel, the designers at House of Lu are expressing a vision. It’s not so much about whether you like what they’ve created, as it is that you get it. It’s about designers displaying their full vision, having a bit of fun, and expressing themselves.
It’s fun to see someone trying this seasonal model when it comes to SL Fashion. RL brands operate similarly and their success here will depend on fashion-hungry customers actually being able to remember that they are on the grid. Spring and Fall are 800,000 residents apart in the wold of Second Life. It’s hard to stay alive in your customers minds without regular releases, but that is where branding and marketing come into play. And from logo merchandise to a brilliant, little blog, the House of Lu is offering some great lessons.
