A happy hair day

By Choice Sliter | October 31, 2006

103106_hair.jpgI seem to be in a little of a hair fever these last few days and have added four new to my collection. Hair is such a difficult thing for me. There are many styles that I like, but that don’t work for me. Often because they are textured with strands that are too thin, wispy, or glossy to ever resemble hair that could occur on me naturally. It’s a matter of ethnic identity. And while some may argue that RL ethnic identities have no place in a virtual world, I’d argue that you that we have always liked playing with dolls that were created in our own image.

While Second Life gives us a platform to play with those images and their associated identities, let’s just say that when it comes to hair there are simply some styles that just look inauthentic on dark-skinned av like me. So any time I find not one, but four, new styles that look great with my face shape and skin color, it’s a happy day indeed.

Now, let’s get to the hair (clockwise from top left):

ETD: The Flapper

Admittedly, ETD hair has been my tried-and-true reliable hair brand, since I was first taken hair shopping a week after I’d arrived in world. And once again she demonstrates how she has earned those raving fans. I have tried several other retro styles in search of my inner Billie Holiday, and I have yet to find one that I felt made me look great (and not just okay). This cropped, curly ‘do is just adorable. It’s chic, it’s retro, and it has that strength that somehow emerges when a woman is willing to chop it all off. I love this new release. It’s shown here in Mahogany.

Zero Style: Misty Short

Rei Gully has been designing hair a short while and has about a dozen styles in her shop. Her store is tag-lined as a “Japanese hair style Shop,” but this shoulder-length bob worked great for me. I love the face-framing fringe bangs and its overall relaxed feel. I am wearing it here in brown, which has dark tips. (Note: Zero Style is listed as 0 Style in Search.)

GuRL 6: Tumbleweeds

It may have a country-bama name, but this hair has city girl style. Tumblesweeds is a modern, short ‘do with bangs that partially-obscure the face. What I loved most was it’s chunky and piecey look. It’s great for showing off a necklace or a pair of earrings. I am wearing it for you here in Cocoa. I was thrilled to finally get to meet Six Kennedy when I popped over for this one. She was a warm and downright bubbly (perhaps from the champagne glass she kept tipping back?). Six mentioned that she gets inspired by the clothes she buys. When we met she was wearing Paper Couture, so I expect to see something new and interesting over the next few days.

ETD Couture: The Layered

Man oh man. I am in love with the way this hair plays with my facial features. This style is an ultra-modern, layered bob. It looks like a $300 hair cut. The kind where some guy with an accent takes a razor to you and you freak out from all the hair you see falling, but when it’s all done you kiss him because you can’t believe he managed to make you look 15 pounds thinner with a hair cut. This is fine, fine, work. I am head over heels in love with this style. It’s willow-Pack worthy. I’m wearing it for you here in Dark Brown.

  1. Im another admitted hair addict in SL. I blow my $400L allowance as soon as I get it on Tues evenings on hair.

Although I go for a diff look, I completely agree with you that realism is important. After all, we can have hair that goes every which way in SL (and many styles do).

I just wish that they dont use the icky green on the demo hairs, so we can get a better idea of how it looks before we buy.

And like you, Im a slave to Gurl 6 as well :) Ill check out some of the other places you mentioned though.

    Thanks for the tip.
