Week in Review 10.01.06: Brown

By Choice Sliter | October 2, 2006

Perhaps it is that nip in the air, the first of the leaves drying and crackling on the ground. Those patches of grass suddenly going dark, preparing for a winter’s sleep. The pumpkin spice latte returning to Starbucks. Whatever its cause, brown was an ever present force this week. We saw it in leather, we saw it in sweaters. We watched it play, and we saw it become glamorous. Each Autumn I welcome the return of of all things brown: the espresso, the nutmeg, the cocoa, the cinnamon, and (best of all) the Halloween chocolate. This week, I bring you the standout releases in brown.

Blaze Entwine Chocolate

Blaze: Entwine
I am not certain how it is that week after week, Mr. Columbia climbs into photoshop and manages to pull out something unique, beautiful, and real world enviable. But, he does. And while Ent Wine is actually a wholly appropriate name for this mystical creation, you will in fact be completely enveloped by the beauty that is Entwine. While shown in an unexpectedly gorgeous, Chocolate, Entwine comes in many colors both dark and pastel. Celebrity models one of the selections in her post and review. View designer’s post. Callie Cline Army Baby

Callie Cline: Army Baby–Brown
Callie Cline introduced the Army Baby ensemble many weeks ago in a few fun colors such as pink, blue, and green. After having seen the rest, it seems that Army Baby was destines for brown. Brown is its color. It loves it. It stands proud and shouts about how good it looks. As you may recall, you have the option (and I believe it’s a must for completing the look) of buying a patch pack. This is an invisible jacket layer that makes it appear as though there are patches on the outfit. A clever concept that I can’t wait for someone else to run with in another design. It’s a tough and sultry look, especially when paired with boots. View designer’s post. W=N, R=N, F=N

Digital Knickers Cigar Girl

Digital Knickers: Cigar Girl
Earlier this week, I made a short post about this sweet little costume brought to us by Astry Miabeau. This truly what a Halloween costume for women was meant to be: sexy, feminine, and whimsical. It shouldn’t be ordinary, nor should it excuse seasonality for poor design and poor fit. I adore this look and think it is just waiting for a short, retro bob or Kin Keiko’s PinUp ‘do. Gritty Kitty Sprocket LocketGritty Kitty Leather Wrist Cuffs

Gritty Kitty: Sprocket Locket and Bronze Leather Cuffs
Noam Sprocket introduced a rugged set of leather accessories this week at Gritty Kitty. Both items are simultaneously retro and futuristic. While these are a definite must for lovers of steam punk style, their neutral color and primitive shapes make them easy additions to boho or tribal looks. Or throw them on with jeans and a teeshirt and let the accessories speak for themselves. View designer’s post. W=N, R=N, F=N
Lavish Style Amber

Lavish Style: Amber
There is something that seems to catch my eye every time something is released from Lavish Style. Perhaps it is the tight skirt pleating, the aggressive use of breast highlights, or the use of pattern. While I find myself generally to conservative to run around in skirts that barely cover my vulva, I admire the girls who pull it off, and have even more respect for the designers that make it happen. Here you have Katy Angel’s Amber, a delicate and lacy halter paired with a short, pleated skirt. The details are what make it. Take a close look at the lace inset on the halter, the way the shirt hem curves. Then notice how the fringe detail mirrors the pleating on the skirt hem and is repeated on the tops of the thigh highs and skirt waistband. Yes. Brown can be sexy. View designer’s post. Mischief Show Some SKin

Mischief: Show Some Skin
Following up a few sweater and cozy knit releases this week, A warm spell hit Janie Marlowe and she decided on Thursday it was time to show more skin. This tribal-inspired set has a sexy, tight fit with an almost bare back. The pants have been laced up the front and at the back cuffs. One imagines pulling one strand and having the whole thing unravel. And that’s exactly what the hottie who wears this wants to have happen. View designer’s post. W=N, R=N, F=N

Nyte N Day SpheruleNyte N Day Beguile

Nyte N Day: Spherule and Beguile
This week we saw multiple releases from Nyte Caligari, including the much photographed Spherule and the cute and sexy Beguile. The shading and play of light on the Spherule skirt is a wonder to behold. When paired with the included tank, the look is boho chic; but when matched with blazers, halters, and or any other top you can throw at it, the skirt has a life of its own. I know that I will pull this one out again and again as the Autumn rolls on. Beguile is an equally flexible set working both as a marled-knit sweater dress, as well as a stand alone sweater that can be paired with jeans and pants. I love the release in brown, but all of the colors are Autumn-perfect and beautiful. View designer’s post. W=Y, R=N, F=N

Shiny Things Leather Bag

Shiny Things: Favorite Leather Bag
When she brought us old leather boots, we gasped. When she added laces, we gasped again. This week, Fallingwater Cellardoor left us speechless. What words can really describe the texture of The Favorite Leather Bag? The gentle scuff marks that come from rubbing against fellow shoppers n a crowded mall? The perfect knot on the flap closure and loves movement created by the tassels? How does one describe the elvish nature of the scroll patterns that scream Fallingwater, without a need for a logo? How does one describe how wonderful it is to strap a bag of one’s shoulder and gently rest your hand against it? One doesn’t. One simply buys this bag. Because she must. View designer’s post.
