Update: Second Style #4 out now

By Celebrity Trollop | September 6, 2006

Second_style_issue4_coverUPDATE: Second Style #4 is now available for download from our website or from our in world vendors. If you’d like a vendor (or your vendor is behaving badly) please contact me or HeatherDawn Cohen.

Here’s the cover for Second Style #4, featuring rock ‘n’ roll cover girl Canimal Zephyr. The full issue is coming soon — later tonight, tomorrow or Thursday at the absolute latest.

We have a dynamite set of features for this issue including an “Inventory Raid” with Canimal Zephyr, an interview with Blaze Columbia, an interview with Ambyance2 Anubis and Lost Thereian (more on them in a later post), Ginny Talamasca reviews the fashions of hyasynth Tiramisu’s silentsparrow, and Starley Thereian gives a tutorial on how to put great looking fabric wrinkles on clothing textures in Photoshop.

I am also really excited about our photo features this month: Rocker Girl and Casual Denim, plus mini-style guides on Stomper Boots and Punk Looks, and more, all inside. All told it weighs in at 70 pages of fashion goodness.

  1. The best thing on that cover is the guitar, who made it?

Just a side comment, and no offense but why do people think it’s hard to put wrinkles in cloth? Anyone who went to art school knows how, and a 3d app (not mentioning which) there’s a plugin you can easily do it and if you are a pro at baking textures, pro as in have done real modding outside of SL, it’s sooo easy to do. I could write a book and publish limited copies on Amazon, about how to improve so much, even using some of the “pros” work in the book (if I had permission) as what not to do. I’d love to help some of these people. Aww well. I wonder if people would be offended if I took a popular item and picked it apart only to show how it could be made better?

  2. The guitar is by Francis Chung.

And if you feel the need to nitpick someone’s garments, why not just make your own and document the whole process?

Take screen captures or make an instructional video and post it on YouTube or blogspot.

  3. Ok this is for the first post, I am sure you are aware that not everyone had the opportunity to attend art school so yes you are being offensive and a snob. There are people who will be grateful for that information. Second Life is full of people who were never formally trained but who learned just by this type of information and turned out to be high skilled. So yes go ahead and write your book do something with your time other than sticking your nose in the air.

  4. Wow. Well I think the majority of designers, especially newer ones, will benefit from the tutorial. Most of them don’t know what baking textures is and don’t have the correct apps to do it.

I agree with what above posters said. If you are a pro at SL clothing design, texture baking and fabric folds, rather than ripping up someone else’s work and feeling all smug and superior, please, by all means, make an advanced tutorial. A lot of people would benefit from that one too!

    Hope to see it. :D

  7. Well I have to say doing textures in other games and then in SL is two different things. The qualities different but method’s similar except on the current gen and especially next gen stuff, there’s some fresher ways.

I haven’t seen much in SL that is as intense as the current or next gen titles, but that’s the engine’s limitations. Back when Havoc engine was new, I did some work for the clan I’m in for a specific game using this engine, and I consider myself pro, and still the engine has really bad limitations compaired to what I’ve been using the past couple years. So it’s hard to judge SL work. I guess some stuff people do is alright for SL. Outside of that it’s not really anything to write home about, and there’s no one I could see being recruited by say Ubisoft, for anything. On the other hand, within the SL world, some stuff is pretty darn good. One thing though, I like to see it in person too, because a lot of pics on boxes at in-world shops or for instance in that mag or on peoples blogs and such always look photoshopped up to hide flaws just to make sales. Or the “I’ve seen that texture on renderosity or in hl2″ issues.

Besides,I just use SL as a 3d chat tool anyway. If I really want to create and make 5-13k a pop on something, I do projects for things that are truely real games/major franchises.

Wrinkles in cloth - definitely not hard to do. No magic there, and I’m not bashing anyone. You can get a book published by New Riders or Sams for 18 dollars that shows you how to do techniques like that. It’s not a new ‘trick’, that’s just the plain and simple facts. No fancy program or college degree is needed either if the person doing is an actual artist.

Looking forward to looking through that issue though. I always like to see what people are doing.

  8. One thing I think about sharing techniques and “how to’s” it allows the people, that who on an everyday basis, aren’t exposed to art/graphic design/3d modeling/game creation or what have you..the opportunity to tap into their creative side. When at any other time they may not know how simple it is to add a wrinkle on a 2d thing to give it just that much more of a 3d punch.

Some people are probably like me…I came from the medical field in the military….nothing creative and artistic about it. But I am so happy to have found something like SL which started out as a game, more or less, and have been able to tap into a creative side I really didn’t know existed. And it’s nice to have tutorials and how to’s and people I can go to who can share their info…because otherwise I don’t really have a clue.

In anycase, my point is…not every designer in SL has a background in art…and if there’s tips and tricks people are willing to share….then lets hear them out no matter how “simple” or “easy” it is. To some it may not be viewed as easy.

  9. Like I said there’s books out there people can get that even the library has, if they can’t afford 18-28 dollars. Those books show exactly how to do all this. You don’t need an artistic background to make those tutorials in the books work because I’ve known a lot of people who have done great texture art, with no background in art. Simple stuff.

  10. LOL sorry if you thought my comment was directed at you. It was more directed toward the first commentor. I guess I should have specified that.

  12. Hey does anyone know what hair is that in the picture?

  13. Sarah, it’s a hair by Kin Keiko. Sorry I don’t remember exactly which one, though — but there are outfit credits right under the magazine masthead.
