Open Thread: Talk about your skins

By Celebrity Trollop | September 19, 2006

Starley Thereian had been looking for some volunteers to test drive a new skin she’s working on and provide constructive criticism. She receieved over 100 applications, and over at her blog she writes:

I’m really impressed with the level of critique and information people included in their applications. Not just what skins they wear, but why they wear them, when they wear them, and how they make them feel!

This was incredibly insightful and interesting to read. The applications themselves have been a HUGE HUGE help and all information provided will be taken into consideration.

I’m not surprised by this — skins are extremely personal (custom hoohah anyone?) and very important to how your avatar looks — wild makeup, no makeup, haute, casual — and the body shading: killer abs, lots o’ cleavage, tight buns, photorealistic or hand drawn, or both. All of these appearance items intersect and come from your skin choice.

So here’s what I’d like to talk about in the comments: What’s your absolute number one skin in Second Life, and why do you like it so much? If you can’t pick just one skin, talk about what skin you wear and why.

I’m really interested in what you all have to say about this.

  1. I favor different skins for different looks, so I don’t have a “I don’t wear anything other than this” favorite The one I probably wear most often is Tete a Pied Deux Sophisticate 1 ,red brows. It’s the overal sophisticated and classy look. Plus great cleavage shading thanks in no small part to your input to Roslin and CJ. It replaced my Celebrity Moonbeams (cinnamon and wine lips) as my go to skin. Though I still like the Celebrity’s and since they have more “glam” shadow might use them more for sultry evening looks. For jeans and cami/corset hip and semi-casual? Skin2.0 by OPIUM, the original Smoke. The smokey eyes give me a sort of “midnight city” look. For a super casual look, it would have to be the TaP2 newbie skins.

  2. Hmmm… if I said one skin, I would probably go with my customized Pixel Deep (Very Dark) by Joannah Cramer. it’s truely mine due in no small part byt the custom tattoos, as well as a simply wonderful and elegant skin to bein with. Realistic enough, but not too much.

  3. I must admit I’ve stuck with my Naughty Designs “Haley” skins after spending ages choosing them.

The makeups are a little more understated than some (I don’t really like the Dusty Springfield look!), the eyebrows are nice and furry rather than just lines and the collarbone makes it a joy to wear low cut tops!

The only part I’m not keen on is the nether bits, but I don’t go naked that often :-)

That reminds me I must investigate Cani’s new vaginas…

  4. I wear skins that I’ve designed and keep for myself. Though I’m blown away by many a SL skin, I’d never wear any of them on a regular basis. Your skin is such an intrinsic part of your online identity (at least it is for me), and the thought of wearing the same skin as someone else just creeps me out ;)

  5. I love my Pixel Deep skins, and makeup packs. Not only do the look great, but the flexibility of the makeup packs gives me so many looks, without having to buy an entire skin. So many skins come with only one color of brows and pubic regions. So all us redheads and blondes are walking around with mis-matched hair:) Pixel Deep come in different basic shades, with 4 makeups, plus the ability to chose brow and pubic options, (full, trimmed, shaven) as do the makeup packs. And on top of all that the skins can be modded with the edit appearance sliders.
