Ad design tips
By Celebrity Trollop | August 23, 2006
Kala Bijoux of Material Squirrel posted a set of graphic design guidelines for people creating merchandise ads in Second Life while waiting for the 1.12 update to finish. Here’s a sampler of the mistakes she covers:
- Images from SL that aren’t scaled correctly
- Too much going on in the ad
- Text (in the ad itself and the announcement post)
- Brand Image (i.e., bad ads give a bad impression on your business)
- Following the KISS principle
- Having a focal point for your ad
A full read of her post is highly recommended.
I wanted to add (ha ha) that as someone who looks at merchandise ads in the forums (and all over teh Intarweb) quite frequently, unattractive or amateurish ads make it far less likely to spark interest on my part (and likely on many other potential customers’ parts) for further review or consideration of that product.
I’m a little surprised that there isn’t more of a robust ad agency market in Second Life. I know that a lot of clothing content creators are also RL graphic artists (which minimizes the need to outsource that work) but clearly that kind of expertise would be valuable in some cases, especially for non clothing items.

Thanks for the mention :) I hope people can understand my rambling rant :)
I do agree with you that many of the designers have a graphic design background that they use to make their ads spiffy. There are a few designers tho making quality stuff but don’t have good ads, and that is unfortunate.
Posted by: Kala Bijoux on August 23rd, 2006 at 6:12 pmHeh… I can tell you why there isn’t more ad/design agencies in Second Life, Celeb. At one point I toyed with starting one, then realized to make it worth my while, I’d want to charge the equivalent of what I would in RL. (I’d be losing money not to, I already am in SL way too much and should be focusing on RL contracts.) That’s… over L$10,000 per hour. No one’s going to pay that for a game, LOL.
I heartily agree with Kala’s post. My pet peeve is the stretching of images. I can forgive amateur typography and EVEN the MS Paint palette colour schemes… but omg don’t stretch stuff! kthxbye.
Posted by: Alaska Metro on August 23rd, 2006 at 6:51 pmmy name is sachi and I have a confession. I enjoy doing some ads but I really hate doing skin box ads. I can get a bit sloppy with them because I don’t like doing them, they are a large scale chore, which is kind of a shame as I love making skins! This is why the Willow Pack is sitting completed in my inventory.
