Linden Lifestyles: SL Fashion Marketing

By Celebrity Trollop | June 19, 2006

Before I went to bed last night, I spotted this article at Linden Lifestyles about how to promote your SL fashion business. In it, Sabrina writes:

For the record, the number of people who ask me “how can I get Celebrity Trollop to review my stuff?” has reached epidemic proportions of silliness. First of all, I’m a million times scarier than Celebrity, who is sweet as pie, so I don’t know why anyone is asking me and not her. Second of all, I have no idea how Celebrity picks what she blogs, but my standard answer is “did you send her your items? Or a link to your New Releases post?”

OK, first of all it’s true: Bri is like at least a million times scarier than me. But since people seem interested here’s a rough guide to how I pick things to blog:

  1. I see a post in the New Items forums at secondlife.com

It’s sad but true that I have a real life day job. Maybe if and when a RL company wants to pay me to blog about SL fashion I could think about going full time, but until then — or until I win the lottery… that means my in world time is extremely limited — so honestly the best ways to get me to notice your creations are out-of-world. Send me an email (celebrity.trollop -at- gmail -dot- com) if you can and you especially want to call attention to something. (A short email with links to photobucket or your blog is fine! It doesn’t need to be chatty - just functional.) Ginny Talamasca (for example) sends me an email almost every morning with her releases for that particular day.

Sometimes if I don’t have any experience with the quality level for a given designer, I’ll “save” the forum post and investigate when I’m in world later before I write something up. I really don’t want to recommend something with a slick ad than turns out to be less than satisfactory when I actually get to try it on in world.

  2. Send an IM when I’m online and/or drop the items themselves or (full perm) ad textures into my inventory. (The textures have to be full perm so I can save them and use them in my post.)

Yes, I won’t deny I like getting freebies — who wouldn’t? But I also want to say that just because you send me something doesn’t mean I’m going to post about it.

Since I’m on the topic, I have to say that I too really appreciate Shep’s “reviewer” packages. They have notecards with pricing information, and full perm ad textures embedded inside that I can save to use in a post. Very nice work. He doesn’t typically send everything in a release either. Just a sampler so that the reviewer can try on the item, get some “how’s your father?” alt-zoom time and the kernel of a posting — what was good, what was superb, and maybe what needs improvement.

  3. Invitations to fashion show type events. Seems like I always find about a show three days after it happened. It makes me positively pouty.
  4. Word of mouth via my friends and other designers.

I know, it’s funny to think about it but truthfully, I find a ton of amazing things just by looking at what my SL friends wear and going on shopping sprees with them.

I especially want to encourage newer designers to contact me. I love breaking brand new (and mostly new) designers.
