Better group functionality in Second Life
By Celebrity Trollop | May 22, 2006
Frans Charming posted a really comprehensive look at the additional features Linden Labs is adding to groups within Second Life. I’m one of those avatars constantly battling to keep a group slot open to join this or that designer’s update group. Aside from more group slots overall, one of the nicest enhancements (certainly one that will affect many fashionistas also members of designer update groups) is
Group Notices: Notices are announcements to the group that may include an inventory attachment. They are sent to email if offline and show onscreen when you next login, or if you are already online. They are opt-outable on an individual basis or per-role as defined above. Past notices are saved for 30 days and available from the groups window.
As Frans notes: Finally we don’t have to use the voting system anymore. Indeed! That will definitely be a step forward. There are lot of other new goodies too, like better and more fine-grained control over permissions within a group. (More roles than just Officer and Member, for example.) When will this roll out? According to Robin Linden, perhaps as soon as Monday the 29th on the preview grid. It’s a nice improvement in a feature we all encounter.
